The last bit is very true - companies are making money for the owners _and_ to pay the programmer's often relatively high salary.

It's a general rule in life that the more 'fun' or 'fulfilling' your job is, the more likely it is to pay peanuts.

This feels like the author simply went for the entirely wrong jobs. It sounds like what he wants is to make decisions, and those you can only make in small teams, small companies, and in lead positions. Going for any sort of FAANG or corporate job is the opposite of this - and that is not specific to programming jobs in any way. Nobody is 'free to just improve the world' in a large group.

In the case of Jira, how much of that is related to frontend code, compared to backend code / inefficient queries?

I find performance suffers mostly when media assets, advertisments, marketing and tracking scripts etc. come into play. The frontend rendering rarely makes a dent at that point.

I might just be getting old and cranky, but I get the feeling we're re-inventing common sense, but replace sense with technology. Can I get an app that tells me to stop letting the water run while I brush my teeth as well?

No. And I sold all the VR devices I had over time rather quickly again. Once the novelty wears off, they just became supremely impractical. For gaming it required the shuffling of furniture. For anything else, neither the resolution nor comfort are there. Even worse if you wear glasses. And in the summer time... think diving goggles, only inverted.

That right there. Failing impossible tasks is not a personal failure and nobody should waste their personal life on these tasks out of some sense of 'pride' or 'loyalty'. The failure lies purely with the person who made those plans. They are the ones who failed _you_, not the other way around.

More I'd hope. There's a good reason for it too, faeces and trash will attract rats and the combination is a good source for all kinds of health issues, especially if you mix it with a large homeless population. Check out the number of Typhus cases in the last years.

Hmm. Seems like there's barely any facial animation. With the pixel graphic you kind of forgave it because your mind fills in the gaps, but with the flash style they are going with here, it feels really dead. At least in this trailer.

I don't mind the touchbar - I mind that it _replaced_ the F-keys! I want proper function keys! If I get some sort of status display _in addition_ to the keys, I'm fine with that.

They put an add-noise filter on top. It's often used to give it a more 'filmic' look and also hides away some uniformity in simple textures. Plain, plan surfaces look very fake, add some noise and suddenly it feels more 'real'.

Plus someone probably decided it would look cool...

For me the mixed model works best, some days at the office, some at home.

I am infinitely more productive when it comes to coding working from home. The constant office interruptions made it impossible to concentrate for any length of time.

On the other hand, any in person meeting felt equally more productive than the zoom ones. Same goes for discussing issues, explaining them out loud to other people etc. without having to set a meeting.

So, for me, the _preparation_ for work is best done in an on site environment, the actual work I do better from home (where I actually also have the much better setup and equipment than at the office)

In a perfect world, this advice is absolutely true (and I've been guilty of it more than once). In reality, here's my experience: - poor specifications from the start, with moving targets in the middle - nobody available or willing to give definitive answers - management stuck in endless meeting loops rather than having time to look at what engineers are actually doing - engineering team (often severely) understaffed and dealing with multiple projects each - not time, patience or mental capacity to dive into what everyone else is doing -> result: crazy amounts of wasted time for everyone

This, as so often, is a result of lack of time, patience and _planning_. It feels like "Agile" has become a convenient excuse to just start and figure out what it is we're building as we go along...

Whether these are reasons for you I can't say, for me it's: - proper support of dual monitor setups (particularly via Displayport) and remembering window positions - WSL2 integration (it really does work great) - eventual drop of Win 10 support

Yes that's kind of what I meant. And we could have those standards for software too (we do, kind of, in the banking and health sector). But with all that which follows those standards - higher cost, lower speed, fewer innovations.

Other engineering sectors do have this kind of liability. What do these sectors have as well? Standards. If a house needs to be built, there are _loads_ of safety regulations to follow. Standards to adhere to. Inspections to be had. Only then is someone allowed to move in.

Software? Decisions are often made without either knowledge or a plan. Agile is a thing. Deadlines are shorter than ever. Also: ideally it needs to be for free. Just pick up that package from Github, it should be good enough (maybe it even has Tests, but who cares, really).

The software projects that are heavily regulated? Take forever to plan and complete. Massive budgets. And still usually are not able to manage to be bug free.

Also: software is really, really complex. And: it is easy to attack. Let's be real: other engineering projects are really easy to break as well - some well placed C4 usually does the trick. But it is hard to get C4. Hard to get access. Also, hopefully, there's an ethical barrier to doing it. Software on the other hand? From home. And once there is an angle of attack, it can attack millions of targets at once. And there are no visible victims, at least not right away, so the ethical barrier is lower as well.

Ok I'm rambling. Anyway. This, as is software, is a complex issue. And liability could totally be a thing, but that means an end to ad-financed applications or 2$/user/month services. You get what you pay for (well, sometimes not even then, but you definitely do not get anything for cheap any more). Perfect example: super-cheap IoT devices from China. Well engineered ones doing basically the same thing? 10x, sometimes 100x the price.
