LA Times and ads 9 years ago

Thats actually a really smart idea. You get the benefit of ads but also pay for the bandwidth they consume the ad delivery network

If I use someone else's cell phone, that doesn't give Big Brother any information about me

I feel he misunderstands the concept of Big Brother. It doesn't matter if there's a screen in the wall, in your pocket, or nothing at all and you're alone in the woods; Big Brother knows.

But then we add the IE-nightmare of using an accepted user-agent in a new product to workaround cases like this

Wonderfully worded. I'd throw that to Bill Nye at big think on youtube at see what he has to say. He loves "far out there" explanations for everything like that

The comment at the end about this being acceptable leaves me wondering. I started programming in 2013 and doubt there was once a time where "bad" coding was ok. Surely there was always someone on the other side of the fence. I suppose when it comes down to it, there is getting it done and getting it done today.

I block all ads globally. Until this "different model" becomes prevalent I'm not budging. The argument that there are websites that can't operate without ads is valid, but there is no websites that __actually__ need ads that would be willing to wall users of ad blockers. Sites like YouTube could never implement such a wall without significant loss of revenue.
