At my first job, I used to grind out work, staying hours past when most people went home. For me, this was the best time to actually get work done without the distractions. But I remember my project manager, who was twice my age, getting pissed off at me and telling me to go home. When I was completing tasks and sending off emails, I was just giving her more work to do that night. So that would be overperforming I think.

Redbox is not that bad. Yes they have a lot of crap but their selection is growing (they even have games). There are some bigger budget movies that I wanted to see but didn't feel like paying full price when it was in theaters.

Great work Tim! Can you elaborate more on some things and see if I can use your app to replace some of our current tools?

My church as a whole is actually using http://www.churchcommunitybuilder.com/ as a directory and it's not that fun to use, although some ministries within the church are more effective with it than others.

I lead the digital video & post production team at my church and we are using a mix mash of Church Community Builder, Facebook group, Google mass email thread and an ugly spreadsheet to keep track of our volunteers attendance, schedule them and communicate the serving opportunities each week. How does the attendance tracking work in your app and would it work for something like this to track volunteers and schedule them to serve?

One reason we have not moved off the CCB platform yet is they have a built in way for the church body to easily send online tithes & donations. Do you have any plans to work that in to your app?

On a side note - I know Hillsong NYC is using this site http://get.planningcenteronline.com/ for scheduling & announcements, and https://pushpay.com/ for payments.

Thanks and again, great job with this!

What I do in crawling traffic is stay in 1st gear at a steady pace and stay in the same lane to reduce the annoyance of starting & stopping so much. You'll notice that large semi trucks do this too. It really benefits everyone if more people did this.

Actually I think Webflow can be a useful tool for if you're a developer who wants to learn how to design a prototype. I struggle with visualizing a new site without a mockup or style tile for reference. Webflow's UI is intuitive - everything you do has immediate visual feedback and directly translates into clean CSS/HTML. The previews of media queries affecting content is nice too. So it's very easy to reverse engineer how to make a good design, the same way you would reverse engineer some source code.

But with that said, I am not a paying customer. When I need to make a site then I just sign up for a free trial and export the code to continue the project. Their individual plan doesn't really make sense for me and I think it's too expensive.

You do save time on daily commutes because you're not including the cost of getting stuck behind lines of dumb drivers. You don't always get to go a smooth 70mph. Going faster (even if just by 5pmh) can get you ahead of a car. That one car can make or break you, because they may be the one that forms a blockade across all lanes that inconveniences everyone behind them. If you're smooth about speeding you can use it until you're ahead of the pack, then you hit cruise control.

I speed for my own safety. 90% of the people I see driving just live in their little box, tunnel visioned directly ahead, with no situational awareness of the cars around them. I feel safer speeding ahead and creating as much space as possible than sitting inside of a block of lemmings.

For diagnosis you need to go to a hospital that does sleep studies. They will hook you up with a sleep apnea machine and sensors and they will monitor your sleep overnight.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea at around 20, which is rare for a young, healthy person. In my case I think it's just genetic because my dad has it. But I figured out something was wrong because I would sleep 10-12 hours and still wake up feeling exhausted. I wore the CPAP machine for a few years and that helped, but now I don't think I need it anymore. I sleep about 7 hours without it and feel fine.

Amazing resource! Thanks for the link and keep doing what you do.

Although, how are these organized? The colors seem to imply some kind of grouping, but besides "the big 3" at the top, the rest seems to be a random order. Maybe group by alphabet, or front end/back end, frameworks, tools, level of skill required, etc. Finding what I was looking for took a little scrolling, no big deal. I appreciate the resource and I will definitely be using it more.

These guys just got a deal with Mark Cuban on Shark Tank. They let you rent textbooks for $5 a day. http://www.packbackbooks.com/

When I was in college, I figured out the textbook scheme by my second semester. We would buy expensive books and next semester the bookstore wouldn't buy them back because they were "outdated editions."

So every year after that, I never bought any textbooks. I would either find the professor's powerpoints online, or make a friend who did buy it and make copies of their book. If I absolutely needed a book I would rent it from Chegg or buy used off Amazon, but now Pack Back books looks like an even better solution.

Free Startup Ideas 12 years ago

I used to work with an office full of females, and a French woman was showing this site to the others. They were reading it and laughing about it, and I remember feeling uncomfortable then. I was imagining how a woman would feel if a room full of men went onto a website and laughed about picking out their ideal woman. A bit of a double standard because it's funny if girls are doing it, but if guys did that it would be sexual harassment. But I'm sure it was all in good fun and it was done in a classier way than men would have done.

I've been developing professionally for about 4 years now and I've tried a 10,000+ company, a 40 person company, a 2 person startup, and now back to a large corporation (with plans to continue the startup).

It's ok to make mistakes, keep learning skills (even if you don't make a lot of money), know your worth, and never give up your dream. You can't do a startup if you have lots of time but have no money to survive, and you can't do a startup if you're making someone else's dream and you have no time of your own. So find the right balance and do what makes sense.

WebFlow 12 years ago

I also use webflow but it definitely seems geared toward small agencies. The individual pricing plan is too much. Again I love the tool and would gladly pay for if the individual plan's cost went down.

SEEKING WORK - Ann Arbor, MI or Remote

I'm a front end developer experienced in HTML/CSS/Javascript (along with HAML, SCSS, jQuery, javascript templating, responsive designs, 3rd party APIs). I have worked with PHP and some Rails apps, currently working on my own startup which is an Angular/Node app.

I have a question about the lesson here "don't write code without having committed customers first." Does this apply to a startup that is not a SaaS product? I am working on an app that has the chicken/egg problem where it can't make money straight away, it needs a strong user base to be effective.

I have been working on this app for the past year it seems like, with development really amping up in the last 6 months. We just brought on another developer to help us finish up and get it out the door. I submitted my market information and business proposal to a university marketing research class, and they gathered data from a 50 person survey for us, which validated our ideas & assumptions. When we do launch it will be a quiet soft launch with friends & family trying it out first. Then we will tweak it with their feedback before we really try to make it public and do serious marketing efforts.

All of that said, our monetization strategy won't be implemented until post-launch once we have this feedback from actual users and a good amount of them sticking around. The whole thing is bootstrapped and we haven't spent anything, aside from the weekend development hours. Does this seem like the right approach for launching our product?

$500k is not going to ruin the game. That's chump change at the higher ranks. What is going to ruin the game is R* focusing on GTA$ instead of fixing the serious gameplay flaws like keeping your friends in one session and giving worthwhile activities to progress together. And give us heists already.

If anyone has played WoW before, it's like you go into a zone and for the next 20 levels there's literally only 1 quest that's worth doing because all the other quest rewards and xp are terrible. But there's an ability to replay this quest so you do it because that's the only efficient way to level up. So Blizzard nerfs the replaying of the good quest, doesn't add in better quests or scale up rewards, and gives away what seems like a lot of money (because you're low level) to keep people from seeing the real problem.

I would tell him to take a close look at his friends and figure out which ones are not good influences. You don't want any "idiots in your boat". I once heard a guy say this and it's so true: "Show me your friends and I'll show you your future."

This is interesting. I'm from Michigan and it took me a couple re-reads to understand you were talking about Upper vs Lower peninsula. I'm from near Detroit, curious if you're more north of that? We generally compare more to Ohioans than "Yoopers" as you say.

I've been living in NYC for a couple years and I've adopted some words and also had "pop" beaten out of me for soda.
