I can only give you a datapoint but unfortunately no advice

1. I never discovered any movie on IMDB. I go to IMDB to find trivia, cast or some other fact about a movie that I somehow already knew of.

2. My interest in an open source project will not be influenced by its popularity or any other metrics but purely by what it means to me. I submitted my first PR to an open source project not because it is popular but because it lacked something I needed.

P.S. Thanks to all the nice people who generously contribute to OSS and offer their work for free. Hats off and respect.

There is more to this: who is you?

If you are the owner who foots the bill and has the capability to run your own infra then nothing beats it. If you don't have the capability then cloud throws you the lifeline at a price of course. Pay for it and be happy.

If you are the guy who runs/manages the infra for someone: then there is no point in saving dollars. You peddle Kubernetes and go to the kubecon and post all about it on linkedin and establish yourself as a kubernetes expert. When the owner of current gig goes under, you will have a bunch of job offers to pick from.

Besides, kubernetes solves a problem very elegantly that most companies do not have. Not everyone is google and running apps on web scale with an expectation of 99.99% uptime...

Yes, I am building an application tracking system(ATS) that also includes a job board. Among other sources, I used HN to populate the job board. My project is not open source, but I am happy to share the HN scraping code with you if you like. My email is in my profile.

Your site looks really nice and addresses a real problem. Are you targeting US only remote roles? If not then including any domicile or timezone restrictions in job snippets may be helpful. Also thanks for providing the feed.

Nitpicking is contagious. Once one does it, then immediately others feel compelled to do it too, me included...

Their pricing page looks amazing. Not because of any funky UI stuff but because of the slight displacement of the decimal point.

Not until it works. But when it doesn't you have an office full of people waiting for someone to fix that broken build server. In terms of lost productivity this disaster is very expensive. Over the years I have suffered only three hardware disasters. One was a NAS+backup screwup but other two were both related to build servers...

I would do exactly what you have done here if I were the dev of the said app. But with the luxury of being an outsider, a user has expressed an inconvenience and it seems to make sense, then if I were to be the dev of the app here, wouldn't I go and create the ticket in whatever system with a link to this post instead of asking the user of the app to follow the red tape? I know there are places where this is not incentivised so this is a question for your org and not for you.

How hard is it to create another “internet” which is completely detached from the current internet?

Seems like a good way to explain the meaning "network effect".

My bad. I was just responding to the parent comment and the comment(by showbug) they were replying to in isolation. Figma is a product I liked and was so terribly disappointed with the news of acquisition by adobe.

Regarding startups, I just did google "define: startup" and in the dictionary definition there has no VC and no exit.

My favourite comment as well in this world so full of pump and dump shows. The mentality is so intrenched that if you are not one of these pump and dump shows with an exit strategy then you are labelled a lifestyle business instead of a proper "startup".

[Off topic] That is some throwaway account with 60k+ karma and almost 7 years in age.

Maker here. Most of the data is from HN with a small amount also coming from weworkremotely (thanks guys).

Accuracy is not very good e.g. we associate the listing to the first geographic location found on the post. Use it for fun but go to the original listing before applying for which a link is almost always provided.

Edit: Added the note to indicate that I am the maker of the linked site.

(November 2023) Koddi | Currently seeking FT employees in the following locations: Ann Arbor, MI | Fort Worth, TX | Austin, TX or Remote Open roles: Sr. Software Engineers (Go, Java, C, C++), Integration Engineers, QA SDET, Front End Engineers and Product Managers Looking to become a major player on a diverse team?

I think you have mistakenly copied an extra header line from your last month's post. I guess you also need a double line break probably just after 'Austin, TX or Remote'

Not commenting about the ppl who are subject of this thread but talking in general. I have been lucky enough to have seen some of these 10x engineers but what is much more common is a 1x engineer feeling and treated like a 10x engineer because they are surrounded by 0.1x engineers.

I was trying to find the schedule for the rover including on ISRO's website[1], but the closest I could find was this[2] and this[3] that suggest the rover will be rolled out in the next few hours or may be tomorrow and it has a life expectancy of one lunar day(14 earth days). Anyone knows if it will be streamed as well?

Thanks jlokier for taking the time to give your perspective. I guess generic nature of many job descriptions comes from the fact that you are forced to have a job description. When I talk to friends they will usually say something like they are looking for a good java developer but the same guys while writing the job description will write a page full of fluff just to make the job ad look legit. Thanks for your other comment too.

Thanks itronitron. I look at both the applicant and the job advertiser as my customers. I want to take the frustration out of the job application process by making it very easy for an applicant to apply and for an advertiser to scan that application in a second.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding minimising the information in a job advert. I had thought of standardising the CV with minimal info but didn't realise that same applies to the job adverts as well.

That's perfectly alright ksec. Perhaps it is not a technical problem but a people problem. Or even a system problem that turns people into lying job seekers and unreasonable employers. Perhaps another manifestation of the same phenomena that PG wrote about recently[1]. I can see why job seekers inflate their CVs. They have to do what everybody else is doing. Just like all companies have to be agile, innovative and have flat hierarchies.

Thanks Shinryuu. I see the point in imposing a cost to avoid spam but I am afraid the real good candidates wouldn't even bother applying if they were asked for a payment before their application could be moved forward. There is some obvious spam that could be weeded out easily with a bit of tech e.g. geo-fencing applications and perhaps there are other ways too.

Similarly I wouldn't want to get in the way of a company that wants to reach out to a willing applicant. In fact putting two interested parties together is the very motivation for this project. Making it expensive for a candidate to apply or for a company to get in touch with the candidate may not necessarily improve things. In such a system the bad actors with money will thrive and i am afraid that doesn't improve the status quo in a meaningful way.

Thanks BossingAround. I fully agree with the gimmicks that you mention as infeasible. One of the triggers for this whole idea is the jobs post that start with something like "For one of the biggest cloud provider in the world I am looking for XYZ talent".

However, I am not sure about the feature you said that you would love. It seems some kind of a research tool to measure a company rather than something that helps someone in his/her job search. Pretty useful to keep an eye on your competition and I do this myself on linkedin very regularly but not sure of its utility for someone who is looking for a job. Of course I have just started to think about it so not very sure of my own thoughts. Thanks again for your sharing thoughts.
