ReScript community is well and alive and is actively working on improving the ReScript compiler and tooling. V10 just came out with records with optional fields - https://forum.rescript-lang.org/t/ann-rescript-v10-released/.... Async/await is in the works. The language is really really good (especially say comparing to TypeScript). Make sure to check it out.

It might be that personalised ads are only marginally better (if at all), but the perception of the advertisers and publishers is that it’s very important, thus creating a (fakeish) moat for Google, as it’s more difficult to execute. Or maybe that’s really not that important, as the biggest moat remains Google being number one web destination.

For what it's worth, I've been working on a state machine library that's more deeply integrated into React: https://github.com/humaans/react-machine.

It does a few things differently from XState / Robot bindings:

1. Use React's useReducer for state transitions and useEffect for applying the effects.

2. Allow reacting to component props (or machine context) and transitioning within the same render where props changed (achieved with a dispatch in the render body). This means the component's children get rendered with props and machine state that is in sync.

3. Separate machine's context (often component props) from machine's state. This reduces the number of unnecessary rerenders, while allowing your machine's reducers and effects to use up to date data and functions passed via props.

All in all, it's my exploration of how to more tightly integrate statecharts into React's render lifecycle and programming model.

The nice thing about CRDTs is that each individual message can be end-to-end encrypted (like WhatsApp messages), and then re-merged by all the clients locally.

A local-first database with such an encrypted sync property would would be amazing for building lots of apps with the ability to sync data between users or between your devices seamlessly. The challenge I ran into my initial experiments is that CRDTs need to be compacted/merged in various ways to stay efficient, but encryption gets in the way of that a little when considering server backups / high availability.

Reminds me a bit of TeuxDeux (https://teuxdeux.com/), specifically the rollover feature. But the addition of “next week” or “next month” is cool.
