Maybe not. Although I think future here implies progress and productivity gains. Increasing GDP has a very well established cause - effect relationship on making life on earth better. Less poverty, less crime, more happiness longer life expectancy etc, the list goes on. Now sure, all externalities are not always accounted for (especially climate and environmental factors), but I think even accounting for these, the future of humanity is a better one where technology progresses faster.
That is awesome! When you say: what the price on the menu is that is what the customer pays; does it include sales tax as well? If so, def a very happy development and pretty much revolutionary for being in the US. If not, is it something you could consider doing? I think it would be the next natural step :) Disclaimer: I’m Swedish, all prices in Sweden everywhere is always including everything, you’ll never pay more than what you see.
I don't necessarily disagree with this. However wouldn't this imply a couple of world changing things:
- We should go for something akin to universal basic income? Given we could produce a bunch of output with very few people (I guess at that point it's more and ideological question of if these few people that get to stay + shareholders are going to get all that value rather than someone else) - People that are talking about "productivity growth" has declined the past 20 - 40 years, are probably wrong and we have seen productivity growth, we've just filled it up with useless stuff and made up jobs? - It also sort of implies that some of the projects that Google and Meta has taken on even though not financially sound right now haven't produced any value for humanity (and I fully understand that in a capitalist society; profits are the way we value things). I think they have and a lot do (like long tail stuff like producing knowledge, producing open source tech, driving tech that while not mature now, will explode in the future, VR + self driving comes to mind)
Another thing that comes to mind when it comes to founder driven companies doing whatever they want is all the Elon Musk companies. He has also made a bunch of crazy bets that "value"-companies would def not have made.
I did include SpaceX as well, and I'm not sure one can find a better example than that, but there are others as well:
- Cruise + other self driving car companies (obv also a bunch of software, maybe even software focused, but looking at Waymo, they developed all their own hardware, LIDAR tech etc.)
- Commonwealth Fusion + a bunch of other fusion startups (obv they haven't really gotten to a product yet one could argue, but a bunch of breakthroughs in high powered electro-magnets has been made)
- Heart aerospace - electric planes
- Canvas construction - robotic plastering and painting for construction.
While supersonic flight has been proven, albeit not economically viable, it's still something that has been done, and done like 40+ years ago. It's not really on the "fusion power"-levels of difficult. But sure, I guess on could argue both sides equally well :)
In regards to research breakthrough, sure they were handwavy at least as it relates to jet engines capable to support supersonic flights. I don't have any sources but I have little doubt that jet engine / material breakthroughs has been made since the 80:s.
This argument could be made about any big SV company the past 30 years.
- Anyone of IBM, Microsoft or Yahoo could build a better (quicker and cheaper) search engine than what a bunch of new grads from Stanford can (Google)
- Anyone of the car manufacturer can build a better (quicker and cheaper) electric car than a software millionaire (Tesla)
I don't agree with the statement, I think there are numerous reason people embark on ambitious project that incumbents "could" do, but are not doing;
- An unexpected insights,
- A new research breakthrough from some other field
- Collecting a bunch of the most bright people coming up at the same time in the field (Mueller for SpaceX comes to mind for instance) etc.
But most of the time it's just that it's not really in their business to do a 100 million dollar - 1 billion bet on something that risky, they are in the business of returning like 7 - 10% a year to their shareholder, not producing 5x returns (like the VC/startup business).
There are a bunch of block-tools which are of the kind "block everyone that liked this tweet", "block everyone that follows this person" etc. Casting that wide of a net probably also carries some "false negatives" (which could explain the "I'm blocked but never interacted with the person).

A simple "pre-ordering"-queue seems it would decrease scalper interest as well (?) as it would be much more risky to order a bunch, hope you get early in the queue and sell to people who might get their machine just little time later.
Let people put up a small deposit as well for getting a place in the queue, and it'll be deducted whenever you buy the machine. Keep the deposit if you cancel your place in line. Would incentivize less manipulation as well.
I've been trying to get a PS5 for 2 years now, and I refuse to pay some scalper 200USD more than market price, out of principle. (But I guess that is also why I still don't have one :) )
There has been a number of submission on HN discussing the chip shortage - and I’ve yet to see anyone discussing using second hand chips, scavenging from used electronics. Obviously as described in the post: redesign is always going to be expensive and cause delays if even possible. But I’m still curious as to why this would not be possible or at least create a much bigger immediate market for old chips?

Some valuations are truly difficult to grasp.
It's quite interesting how people keep betting against Elon. The HN crowd should consist of mostly risk-tolerant personalities, but the majority of comments are negative. Regardless of what one might think of the feasibility, no other company in the world today are as ambitions as SpaceX and Tesla (+ Neuralink). Feels like what Apple used to be during the "one more thing"-era.
Both Tesla and SpaceX has been discounted so many times before, and despite proving time and time again that they will and can deliver, they keep getting discounted.
Oh I was looking for something like this but with a bit of a different intent: building from instructions, but of course you have to look for pieces in a random pile of legos. Use CV to identify the piece(s) you are looking for.

Chiming in here as well; I always trust Amazon to refund me if something is missing or broken without any hassle. A lot of other retailers always gives you a hard time even though they are at fault. They have a huge problem with counterfeit but again always easy to get your money back.

- you might not want to risk because you don't have lawyers etc in your company.
- even if you have lawyers etc in your company, if there are 2 alternatives one which is just an MIT license, you'll probably go for that one because you don't want to have a 1.5 month review of the use of this AGPL licensed alternative.

I know this perspective is not relevant for most companies: But for side-projects and a-like the cold-start time for Aurora is like 15 - 30 seconds, and the first query always times out. Having it always on (if just 1 "compute") will cost you 30 USD a month. I'm hoping for Aurora to eventually be closer to DynamoDB pricing and startup (I'm fine with 5 - 10 second cold start as long as it doesn't time out the first request everytime.)
I was about to say that the Link (Neuralink) is already bidirectional, so they should already be able to spike each electron as well as read from it. But I had troubles finding any sources supporting this, so I'm not so sure anymore. I know that Elon talked about this in the early presentations though.
On the same note: I love the saying that comes up here and other places sometimes "if SpaceX can have pricing on their launches, your SaaS product can provide a pricing section".
If I can't afford it, i'm not of interest to you anyway, if I can afford it, why not give it to me ? Only time I can understand it if you have something highly customized which will greatly affect the price, if not just give it to me.
These are some very unfortunate consequences of GPLv3 licenses. One of the best VSLAM libraries out there that was fully open (BSD2) now terminated from the original maintainer and creator because of possible similarities to GPLv3 source code.
I can't imagine the open source proponents for GPLv3 had this in mind when they created it.

I've seen this around the internet and I have one honest question for clarification:
- How come a bunch of other brokers also stopped the trading in these assets? (Webull, Ameritrade, e-trade etc) did all of them end up in this state?
(I'm always worried questions like these in times like these are interpreted in bad faith, but this is an honest question, trying to understand the powers behind it)
Fully agree with this. Free is free, you could always argue that there is "a spirit to open source"; but as with everything there's always going to be people exploiting and using it, that comes with the free.
To me it boils down to if you think that it's worth it: whenever I put MIT or Apache 2.0 on my public Github projects, I don't mind anyone going out making millions on them. Other side of the coin; if I make millions on some obscure library I found on Github with an MIT license, I do not expect them to be outraged about it.
If you do not think it's worth it, as you said there are a range of other licenses out there. I love the notion of human knowledge being free and available to all to the fullest extent, I think it will drive (and has driven) immense value for humankind.
I've been super excited for this space for a long time. Novel interaction ideas in the digital age seems to have a hard time breaking through (mouse and keyboard has was really a killer application).
I'm wondering if a matrix of wire which could just run some very small currents through gloves onto specific sections and points on the hands could work ? (please be gentle, I haven't really researched this just a fun thought :) )

I'm not that opposed in general to whiteboarding if you feel like you can't assess the candidate. However I do feel that it sometimes feels like credential and experience similar to what you describe in the medical field: if a doctor had 5 years at an inner city hospital, I don't think they would doubt his credentials to the point the want to make him put cell structures on a whiteboard?
This is not a rhetorical question: How does other industries hire high knowledge well educated candidates ? How does doctors, mechanical engineers and space flight engineers get interviewed and assessed ?
As have already been reiterated in each and everyone of these threads (about leetcode/hackerrank/whiteboard coding) this is what the companies seem to think is the most proven, and produces most consistent results. But I would love to understand how other industries does this as well; does a propulsion engineer start to draw up a de Laval nozzle and calculate the exhaust gas velocity on a whiteboard? (again genuine question)
I don't want to start another "SF vs Miami/Austin rest of the US" but! An awesome thing in the Bay-Area is all the insane stuff you get on eBay and Craigslist. I bought a Velodyne VLP-16 LIDAR for my mobile robot side project and met up with a guy in SF. He had a startup that ended up using vision only so they sold off their LIDARs.
I have a lot of good things to say about AirBnB, it's beautifully designed, the one time we used it, it was great. Awesome host and at that time, much cheaper than a hotel.
However I can't get over the service and cleaning fees, especially as they are added on the second page. I don't mind them, but why not include them on the listing page?
Not sure if it's an US thing or if it's something people actually falls for? This is a practice that is prevalent throughout industries, but one standing out of course is restaurants. The menu price: 20USD BUT + SF mandate + service fees + sales tax + mandatory tips, the dish is actually at least 30USD ? Why not just put that on the menu? In Sweden for instance (and most of Europe) the price you see in stores and on menus is the price you pay. Someone starting the next AirBnB and just shows you the actual price on the front page that is on your statement of your credit card in the end, will be very successful (I hope!)
