Define work?

My day is 10 hours, door to door.

I spend (realistically)

-- 3 hours commuting on the bus, doing emails, sheets, bugs, easy stuff

-- 2-3 hours in meetings

-- 2-3 hours of individual focussed work

-- 1-2 hours lunch, snacks, coffee, chatting, non work errands, personal email, shopping

I did a nanodegree, it was a complete waste of time for me.

It was impossible for me to get a job with those (basic) skills. A lot more is needed.

I have been on the other side also as a hiring manager. I would never screen (let alone hire) anyone just on the basis of the nanodegree

Over the last 12 years I have interviewed dozens of candidates for jobs. Not a single wore a suit.

The suit is really dead in the workplace (in Silicon Valley)

1. Where there is a will, there is a way.

2. To get something done, give it to someone who is busy.

This can be a nice calculation based on the contour lines. I'm sure there are several local optimal solutions (Bay Area, San Diego) but I'd be interested in working on an elegant "doable" solution (e.g. no more than 200 miles of travel a week)

What has that got to do with the stock price?

In the active v/s passive debate it has now become widely clear that passive wins ALL the time when controlled for risk.

I wonder what the market for such a product is compared to main stream actively managed funds. Why should I choose some unknown "expert" off the Internet instead of say Bill Gross, Peter Lynch or John Neff?

Heavy list, I've read a few, but skimmed through most of these.

I'm certain only a handful of people have read all these books completely.

Absolutely not. You will have to pay taxes on withdrawals and a 10% early withdrawal penalty. Depending on the size of the withdrawal, this will immediately set you back 6-7 years of the 13 you contributed. If you have ~30 years to retire, even a small withdrawal will set you back by 10 years at retirement. Run some basic compound interest calculations if you don't agree.

There are many other options: moonlighting, going part-time, reducing your responsibilities at work, taking an unpaid sabbatical, etc.

Sorry, but NOBODY (much less we all) can predict short term stock movements. If I KNEW a correction was coming, I'd be a billionaire by now.

On a day-to-day basis, the stock market is a random walk. There is no way to know WHY Facebook is dropping and Twitter is rising. If somebody knew, he or she would have been billionaire many times over.

E*trade allows shorting stocks and writing covered puts at Level 2. The default (Level-1) allows only covered calls. They have an online application process. Usually chances are higher if you are trading over $100k.

I wonder what the monthly rent is there. It might just be a better idea to skip abnb and rent out the place over a 12 month lease.

I read the whole article and do not agree. Here in Silicon Valley the importance of appearances has become marginal. Yes, you have to be clean, presentable, but that's it. After that you need the skills, talent, knowledge and aptitude to perform your job. And you need that everyday, to keep your job, in this hyper-competitive environment.

I was a poor starving immigrant student at one point. I did fine without even mildly expensive clothes, shoes or cars. I've also hired poor resource-less college kids. Anecdotal, but the best workers (in our technical field) were the ones who cared the least about appearances.

Three Simple Ways That I Optimize My Sleep, not backed by science:

1. Work hard and find time to exercise during the day

2. Relax my mind towards the end of the day, have a beer, watch some TV, etc.

3. Read a little before dozing off

OP is clearly not in it for the economic sense.

A $1000 Craigslist beater or a $20/month bus pass can probably do that commute.
