I'm on Android and I've been in the testing phase of Swype for a very very long time. Swype's major failing is the adding of unusual words. It's not built for real touch typing even though they added that feature in. Also I've given it a very good go since I use my android device for blogging as well and while swype performs remarkably well in portrait mode it feels different in landscape. the distance your single finger has to travel as opposed to being able to use all ten fingers to touch type like you would on a standard keyboard makes touch typing feel like the more efficient method here.

Thus I think swype for phones is fanstastic.. Swype for tablets is great if for some reason you can just use one hand.. But both hands hand touch typing works the best on a tablet imo. And this particular invention enhances that effect a lot.

Unforunately the 404 page itself is protected but the rss.xml request leads you to the 404 page where you can find the categories. Can anyone else do some probing in? I tried using curl to bypass stuff but it kept redirecting me to the password redirect url

The peak is set to hit towards 2013. ZDNet (I think) ran an article on how it would mean that power would need shutting down for 3 months to avoid being burnt out during the peak

The dev blog entry was definitely one of the best I've read in a while on lessons learnt from a project. This line in particular,

The main idea was: “Stop worrying about if there’s something better. If you can do it right now then just go with that.”.

Says it all. That's a difficult wall to break past and I've struggled and I'm still struggling with it for my Android app. And I don't even have an app review to pass.... shame on me for not having any app out there. Thanks a lot for sharing this. The dev article was definitely an inspiration. Ah well. Good luck with the future run of this. You are right. This database does have a huge amount of potential in it so it'll be interesting to see where this goes :).

Just so people know. Just predicting what this is is not my only intention. I keep seeing members of the tech community dumping nearly every new idea or iteration the moment they first see it and I think as people who call themselves tech enthusiasts that's a real dumb thing to do. You can't progress without change, you can't change without trying and trying means experiments.

Being part of the tech world means being part of the fastest evolving community and the one that gives room for all further innovation in nearly every other sector.

My biggest purpose in doing this is to try and show that given an apparent lemon, how you can try and make lemonade out of it, or rather how to try and build up on what's available for you rather than always wanting to stay in one's comfort zone.

One point about arranging results. Google power users only. And Google would have an algorithm being modified to suit your interests. If crowd sourcing doesn't work, if friend recommendations don't work because of the noise then your obvious best choice would be to have an algorithm work the way the user wants it to work. And how do you do that if the user can't tell what he/she wants. Hence the rearranging of results which is the user saying "No Google, I kind of like official pages more than blog posts" (or vice versa).

PS - Thanks a lot to the great HN community which sent the traffic soaring through my blog. I'm trying to score a position as a professional tech blogger eventually and this sort of stuff gives me a lot of motivation to keep at it.

Well a supportive wife is a little different. But a relationship where your communication is mostly after work hours since you aren't living together yet could get strained if not managed correctly. I'm quite serious about this question because there is a very strong possibility of it happening to not just me but a few others as well soon. So any suggestions? Because if it is a road of no compromise, one or the other, I'd have to take the relationship I guess. But I would honestly prefer both.

This structure is pretty easy to follow if you are really passionate about what you do.. but just asking if you happen to be in a relationship like being engaged would you have any idea how to give time to everything? Or is that where the line gets drawn? (No not applicable to me... yet..)

Everytime I see one! I think they are fantastic and misunderstood and under utilized. Social network information storage is one of the best use cases.

Well I'm curious as to how the idea came about. Way I see it I think you may have gotten the idea by looking at conversations that might tend to flow on a forum like warez bb. But actual downloading for most people would work like this. Person sees link. Waits for 30 seconds for it to be available and then sets it to download and continues with whatever they might be supposed to be doing.

So here come the questions 1) are you solving a problem? Or is this a novel idea you think might be cool? If it's the former then what is the problem? If it is the latter the next question will be even more relevant 2) typical file share downloads won't last more than 15 minutes. Minimum a minute. Average somewhere around 4 minutes. Why would people want to chat for that time? 3) given that people set stuff to download and move along you have to be adding value to what peoples time if you expect them to devote time to chatting instead. What's the value you add?

I will never shoot down an idea outright so go ahead and answer without worrying that I'll cream over you. But you do need to be able to answer those questions to anyone to say why your idea is actually something that would be worth using.

But doesn't that tell you what his customers wanted? They wanted something faster. They just didn't know how. You always have to know what people want. Delivery in a way that they don't expect it is what converts the need into a "revolution"

You bought this you got that you have the technical skills.. but do you have a plan? do you have a design on paper or whiteboard which you can implement?

Here's something I did to get past my own wall two months ago. I told myself to shut up, set aside some time each day (after I started working it was a lot easier. The only time I had was after work hours till 10 30 in the night) and then follow these steps.

1) make sure you are fresh, preferably having had shower 2) phones, distractable media all shut off and put away. block everything except your resources on the net if you have to 3) put down what you are going to do either on a small A4 size like whiteboard, or an A4 drawing paper (blank white is best to focus) When putting down the stuff do it this way a) write down the features you want to implement in your current development cycle b) draw up the screen designs if you need to c) think through the logic and put down what's needed.

Get to Work!

Methodologies are there for a reason. They do actually work. Btw, before starting. Make sure you have a clean overall view of the project as well. Not just the 'pitch'. Put down your main use cases and the features for each use case there (two levels max you can elaborate during the main cycles).

What's wrong with you is not lack of motivation. It's a lack of focus. I've dealt with it when learning languages too. I'd spend hours reading the material and come away with nothing. You need to know what you will achieve and that within a practical time frame. If you are having a really bad case of not being able to focus, I suggest a maximum time frame of two days. I currently work on a functionality a week/fortnight basis.

I'm surprised that no one replied here. At our office which isn't a startup at all btw we use clocking it. Thing is that with most of the free alternatives you have to live with self hosting. But since a lot of them also run on open source you can get it for pretty cheap.

Yea I saw that bit on sites that have used drupal and really scaled well. What I did mean by scaling well though was the speed at which I could add features and make small changes and tweaks to existing ones. that's why I took that statement out of the comment but kept it in the edit just so anyone could clarify. Thanks.

edit - after looking at drupal i took off the line "Drupal might be ok for initial stages but it probably won't scale as well".

I like it. and with cloud storage becoming the next big thing this is definitely going to get more and more useful
