I think the example code is written using _ to convey the similarity for those familiar with underscore/lodash. In 2015, that's most JS developers.

Ted Hughes's Metamorphosis. Such a sick translation of Ovid.

I love this book for it's, ah, eloquent and inclusive way of describing more advanced JS topics. Definitely of value, even for the more experienced JS dev.
