That's...not at all what they said...
Maybe the key to improving incentive is to bind the acts of participating in and supporting a decentralized service so that simply using it helps construct the network itself, i.e. every client is itself a federated server. The tradeoff is that the service has to be robust enough to support a certain percentage of clients being offline at any moment, and it certainly takes more effort to construct a client that includes what would normally be delegated to a server.
(I'm sure someone's already thought of/worked with this idea before, though.)
That makes sense. I do appreciate that they went to the effort of putting intended use cases on their website, and I wouldn't mind explicitly encountering some of them (I would gladly mine some cryptocurrency to help support video creators I enjoy rather than watching or seeing ads). I just worry that "morally objectionable" and "PR disaster" aren't enough to stop JS miners from being used without the user's consent on sites--to me it feels somewhat comparable to ad tracking behavior.
That feels like the problem to me--there's no incentive for a website to do so instead of simply mining without the user's consent.

It does say to rinse them with tap water, but also to rinse & soak with solution afterwards...presumably negating the dangers of the tap water.
Which solution are you using? Fellow contacts user here (monthlies), I'm looking at the side of my B&L bottle and it says to use nothing besides the solution.

Heh I was shooting for the REST API because I figured there's nothing that doesn't communicate through it today. I'll have to check into it more, especially if I decide to do dedicated stuffs down the line. I am a fan of the multiple strips thing.
Awesome, thanks for the heads up! Like it says in the blog post, PWM + transistors was an option I was thinking of (and still am if I ever decided to dip into dedicated hardware later on), I just wasn't sure if I had the electronics chops yet to not blow something up.
As someone directly inside Snapchat's apparently largest demographic, I honestly can remember voluntarily watching one of the live stories twice, both times because they were related to my hometown. I've never once touched anything in the Discover section, because to be brutally honest, it's exactly what I try to escape. I'm a college student, and beyond even missing cable TV, I now actively dislike it when it's present in the environment. Maybe all my friends are the outliers in the demographic here, but I strongly doubt that any of them would want to watch the Discover content voluntarily either. Snapchat as an entertainment app is foreign to me--I'm using it to communicate with my friends, not with strangers' experiences. I'm already saturated by that content and traditional television content through other avenues.

I've used Dropbox for a long time, and it's been really useful in school (as others have noted) and for sharing files, but recently I've actually moved to ownCloud (https://owncloud.org/). I hooked a 500GB HDD into my RasPi at home, spent some time on configuration and setup, and now I've got functionally the same product, but limited in space only by how much storage I want to buy (one-time cost, obviously) and plug in instead of the 13.25GB I have on DB that I had to scrounge around for offers and promotions to get.
It's nice because I have a backup of whatever files I'd like at home instead of somewhere else, and if I were super paranoid I could make that into redundant storage, back that up daily, etc. It's a little more work but a lot more control.
If the linked post is accurate, it sounds like an absolutely horrible work environment.
