I asked this question back in 2014 (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7367243) hoping to start something myself. It's now 2021 and I still have nothing to show but failed attempts. Looking through the list of businesses from 2014 and a vast majority of them look like they are still active which is great! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It is tougher to find the time these days with 2 kids, but I am setting myself the goal of $25K from non hour based work this year. Well done to all of you that have succeeded. To all of us dreamers, this could be the year!

I started a new job and the sysops guys works remotely. I had been communicating with him for over a month via email and chat before a colleague told me that sysops guy was blind. He is quite brilliant.

Yep GA has become mostly useless for me too. I tried checking the box for Google to automatically remove known referral spam on all of my sites but it doesn't seem to change a thing. Might not be such a problem for sites with a lot of traffic but for most of mine spam > valid traffic

The New Airbnb 12 years ago

I don't really care about the new logo. But I do wish that the "new airbnb" allowed me to sort the listings by price. This is standard practice on any other site I can think of. Sure I can set a price range but this still forces me to have to think. I like the fact that when I sort results I know that as I continue scrolling the price is going to increase. That way when I find a place I am happy with I know that there is not going to be a place further on which is better value. Please let me know if I am just being stupid and have not figured out how to sort the results.

I use a different name every time to keep things interesting. I am quite a large guy so saying my name is Susan always shocks the barista and makes others chuckle when my name gets called. I try christmas themed ones like rudolph and blitzen during christmas season.

My real name is Kewan which is difficult for people to get right when they first hear it so I often just use Kew or Q which is quite funny when they call "coffee for Kew"

Thanks for the feedback. Yep I understand the privacy concern, and that people would feel more comfortable with an app. This was something I whipped up after seeing this post on HN a while back: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7520216. So I can't take credit for the conversion idea. I do not know enough about iOS or Android development to know if it would be possible to do the conversion on the device instead of server side. Will look in to it if there is enough response. Doesn't look like this one is rushing to the front page though...

I have recently switched to crunch. So far so good. Setup is pretty painless if you wait until a new financial year. Only downside I see so far is that the accountant is more like 3rd line support. The online software is pretty straight forward though and it displays your current tax liabilities in real time. I recommend signing up for a free demo.

Thanks patio11 and everyone else who has shared their story. I have been consulting for a few years and I plan on moving to a product based income. Built products in the past that have not been successful but hearing stories of others who have done it is motivation to keep trying.
