Completely agree. People put to much blame on social media networks. Though I like Twitter and dislike Facebook they are not the core problem.

China (Netflix) takes what the United States(Hollywood) doesn't want to do/finds little value in. Once China (Netflix) has a foundation of manufacturing know-how (media catalog)they move up the chain to more complex technical (media) products.

I would definitely like to see a more parental income based AA. Take the proverbial Black applicant whose parents are dentists, versus the proverbial Asian applicant whose parents emigrated and own a struggling restaurant.

Who would rank higher on the AA scale? We know the answer.

The other changes you mentioned are way more important, substantive, and difficult. How many parents (even those with great intentions!) would make the required sacrifices to see an equitable educational outcome for someone else's children?

Yep. It seems the less you have more will be taken from you. I think industry’s cater to low wage earners know their customers have so few options.

Glad to hear this come out. Worked at a Goodwill store for a summer. Involved lots of heavy lifting of furniture, strict managers, insane scheduling rationale, and auschwitzean like propaganda regarding the power of work.

Fair point about your experience but at the same time some people hate(ed) their formal educational experience and/or had to work constantly through college.

The fact that college can teach critical thinking I find highly suspect. Also when exactly does all the critical thinking skills "taught" activate?

Is it after my freshman year, going into my senior year, or only once I have that holy piece of paper (a college degree).

Regarding history...well historically colleges were for wealthy white men/the upper class.

Is it fair that teachers can’t afford to live in the districts they teach in? I think not.

Should districts have to cut activities ( sports, arts, etc) to pay for a pay raise? I think not.

But these examples ^^ are simple and possess less moral hazards than the issue of teacher pensions.

As far as I can tell teachers in California were promised a certain pension payout by politicans no longer in power. Should the present population subsidize the foolish promises of the past?

I think not.

But I know very(very) little about how pensions function so am curious how HN thinks we solve this crisis.
