FreshRSS might be worth a look. Has most, if not all, of what you're looking for. The paywall ladder might require a plugin.
I’ve been paying for it for the last year or so. Whatever the mid level is. Part of the value is that I’m not reminded of what I filtered out—which is a double edged sword. But when I find myself on someone else’s device that defaults to Google or Bing, I do see the difference (again).
Presumably any CalDAV server would be sufficient. But I’m sure there are gotchas.
Have you checked out mice marketed for gaming? Particularly for MMOs, you’ll find a few 10+ button mice. I’ve been a happy user of Logitech’s line up, for what it’s worth.
I use Digital Ocean's App Platform which has free hosting for 3 static sites. CD is setup through integrations with GH/GL/BB, if I recall correctly. No particular reason why I chose this, other than I had a DO account open already for a few latent domains. It's proven to be simple enough & batteries included.
The only consistent ones for me are TrueNAS and FreshRSS. Other apps haven't lasted as long in my network.
Setup a confidential information & inventions assignment (CIIA) agreement to protect the IP created for the company, alongside the rest of the employment agreement.
Also, if your concern is judging their character, consider adding another person that you trust into the interview process. Either as a technical or behavioral round.
`xargs` is a helpful command to keep in mind. I use that surprisingly often when scripting something up.

When running `git bisect` or simply doing archaeology on a code base where the previous author(s) left the organization, I've never regretted reading granular commits--only too coarse.
[0] Largely depends on the team's workflow and the functional size of feature branches. If there are a lot of smaller commits made to develop/main/etc., then you can probably get away with squashing.
Pretty simple workflow, here. I've been using Kill the Newsletter![0] to get newsletters into an RSS reader and out of my inbox. KTN generates a new email address to use for the signup, and an associated atom feed to subscribe to. Within your reader, I have the freedom to group and organize my RSS feeds as I see fit.
My workflow doesn't address your primary problem of reclaiming storage; I've addressed that with buying more local storage: I rely on two TrueNAS servers and Backblaze B2.
The primary TrueNAS server has a dataset for photos and is served via Samba share that I mount, as my primary access point across devices. Lightroom points to this share for the photos, and iCloud for Windows downloads new photos and videos to this share, as well.
On a weekly basis, that dataset is replicated to the secondary server and also synced to B2 via `rclone`. I do make use of the `rclone crypt`[0] option before pushing to B2, where the filenames are scrambled. There's no particular reason for this, other than it's how I first set it up years ago and haven't needed to change it. I have practiced file recoveries periodically to ensure I can still access my photos via `rclone`.
Assuming you have a Mac paired with your iPhone, I'd consider iCloud for the usability wins for your requirements. You can toggle the setting to download original resolution photos for the desktop Photos app and backup the resulting files separately. Perhaps to Glacier.
RSS is how I filter and consume the majority of my news, blogs, HN, newsletters, and monitor Google Alerts for domain specific questions or topics that I'm interested in.
For the client, I've landed on FreshRSS for the web/desktop experience as it allows me sufficient control to group and tag articles for my own needs. Deployment is simple: docker-compose on a small Droplet that hosts a few other apps. It's helpful that there are a few RSS reader apps on iOS that support syncing with self-hosted FreshRSS instances, as well.
You could setup an RSS reader with hnrss[0] to follow a particular user's posts and comments. This has been working pretty well for my own purposes. From there, the frequency of your updates should be configurable by whatever RSS reader you choose.

You may want to look at Miniflux[0] to see if that fits your needs. There's a paid hosting option, but it's also straightforward to deploy on a VPS or your localhost.
Alternatively, you could also look at having yet another app like Reeder[1] that syncs to Feedly, FreshRSS, Miniflux, etc. while helping to clean up the browsing and reading experience.
Similar situation here with FastMail for emails with people, while keeping my G-Suite account (free; grandfathered from the Google Apps days) around for Google-services whenever I need to hop on to a Hangouts and such.

I would first suggest improving your monitor situation.
I often find myself in a situation where there is a single application that I want to focus on (be it the terminal, a document, etc.) with some reference material (browser, other document, etc.) that I need. The ability to have even these two windows visible, together, without needing to alt-tab between them has been a big win.

I've used the Innolitics standard browser in the past and can attest to this browser as a very helpful reference. Of the options available, this has been the most pleasant to work with while also linking to the spec. for that occasional deep dive.
