Same here. I used to have Linux on my iPod and Xbox, MythTV running on a server and Fujitsu netbook. Now between the hockey rinks and soccer fields, I take out my iPad Pro for HN, light photo editing and Netflix if I’m lucky enough to find an hour of down time. There’s enough Linux, QNX, Windows, FreeRTOS, Azure, etc etc all day at work now.

As someone who has this week been going through, in detail (is there any other way?), the American CCL and Canadian ECL, this is absolute gold. Thankfully the items in question are no longer on the USML…

I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes collections in the back seat of the car on family vacations. I was 14 when the strip ended so I had lots of historical material to go through at the book stores (!).

We have the anthology at home, I think it’s time to introduce the kids (6 & 9) to Watterson, although my son is already an expert at Calvinball without even knowing it.

What struck me reading this piece was thinking about how all the constraints that Watterson faced just don’t exist today, as he pointed out with his “click of the mouse” comment. Constraints can often lead to creative solutions, I wonder where Calvin and Hobbes would go in today’s landscape.

You can read up on the system safety side in documents like ARP5754 and ARP4761 and hardware side in DO-254.

During the pandemic we ended up going the thinkpad route due to availability. We now have all our users on ThinkPads from admin to engineering, including CAD capable models for our Mech team. No complaints really.

If you aren’t currently, sounds like you are ready to use an ERP to track such things and link your BOMs to suppliers and purchasing.

You could probably get a BOM into something like Odoo over a weekend to test it out.

Canada (Ottawa, ON): the only cash I deal with now is for the kids to learn about or for the odd farm stand. Most farm stands have gone to cashless as well.

Canada’s got the Interac system owned by the banks which has merchant fees lower than credit cards and also provides an electronic money transfer system (email or sms based) for the public.

I'll generally start with defining the "INCOSE" kind or the "MCSE" kind and most of the time people from one group or the other will know of the one they are close to and little to nothing about the other one.

As a couple others have commented, this post seems a little muddled, and there is a huge formal set of work in the world dealing with what Requirements are, how to elicit them, and then work on design. For example, see the INCOSE Requirements Working Group [0], and their Guide to Writing Requirements [1].

It’s key to remember that the requirements of a Thing are the WHAT and not the HOW. Keep the requirements separate from the Design, then the requirements can stay pretty short and sweet.

It takes a very specific type of engineer or analyst to be able to think at this level of abstraction and not jump into solutionineering (design) when trying to establish exactly what the stakeholders want the system to do.
