Homebrew and mise-en-place are the only must have apps for me (both of which are not .app applications). Everything else is pretty well context-dependant and/or built in. For Homebrew - having used Nix, Macports, and pkgsrc, I found Homebrew easier than everything else. I would like to get into Nix, but there is too much mucking around for it to be worth it to me.

mise-en-place has such a unique feature set that I can’t compare it to anything else. I started using it as a replacement for pyenv and sdkman, and found it so helpful.

For me, the better-than-you-think built in apps are:

- Reminders - I haven’t gone all in on any other task management software, but I don’t bother because Reminders does everything I need

- Mail - it is fiddly and idiot proof to a fault, but provided you don’t have an exotic setup and can deal with only average search capabilities, it works well

- Calendar - it’s a calendar. Only thing I don’t particularly like is the date-picker interface for new events, and that’s mainly because I like my Sunday-Saturday format

- Terminal - it’s tidy and works well. Many swear by iTerm2; I find Terminal good

- Safari - does what it says on the tin and does it well, I like Safari. (Edit: I use Wipr2 for Adblock which is necessary)

- Passwords - having been a medium-long term user (2-5 years) at various times of both Keepass and Password Store, I ended up transitioning to Passwords because of its good integration with Safari and its sync in iCloud, which is good for family. However the app itself has improved over time as well and I call it good

Unless you mean they should get on a level and work through their differences, that’s an awful thing to say. There are over 3,000,000,000 people living in India, Pakistan, and China.

I thought, surely this can’t be right - but can confirm that this is the behaviour I see as well, opening a .ics file in Files lets you inspect the event but doesn’t seem to give you any way of importing it into a calendar (even from the share sheet). Maybe you could email the file to yourself but that seems like a pretty roundabout way of doing it.

Not that I ever get a .ics file from anywhere except my emails, but it would be nice to be able to actually use them if I have them.

There’s (arguably) an argument to be made that Emacs configuration distributions fit that niche - Doom Emacs, Spacemacs, and Prelude provide varying flavours for different kinds of Emacs users.

Apart from that, I don’t really know what an application would be to Emacs as nvim is to Vim. It’s more like nvim is to Vim what Emacs is to nano, except Emacs came first.

IAMNAL but there’s usually a clause to say that if some part of the agreement isn’t valid/can’t be enforced/etc then the rest of the agreement stands regardless. Who knows how well that stands up though (probably lawyers somewhere, but I doubt it is cited often).

With respect to being open source - it’s GPL licensed (with classpath exception), and there are several vendor-supported builds of the JDK. People typically use these or OpenJDK. You only run into licensing trouble if you use the gratis, commercial build of Java provided by Oracle, which you would only do if you’re a newbie or have a highly unusual usecase (there’s really no other reason to use it, even in industry). Java has a massive ecosystem which has the benefit of having both extremely stable, old libraries and newer stuff. It’s the language of industry and middleware; it’s verbose (but less so in recent versions); it’s reliable and easy to reason about. Its strong/static/declared typing is something that some people don’t get around, which is fine for them but really it’s just nice for sanity when working with a code base that’s more than a few thousand lines or that someone else wrote. I reckon it’s the Corolla of programming languages. For what it’s worth I think it’s also pretty fast, even though its zero-to-sixty might not be very impressive.

Anyway, I think this is a similar divide to the performances of ‘Hurt’ by Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash. People come to each with their own preconceptions and their own taste, and ultimately both tracks explore different ground and express different things through the same composition.

It is all a matter of taste; for what it’s worth, I think no one has to think something is good, but I have a lot of time for people whose sense of taste lets them explore the ground that the artist tries to take them to and understand the artist on their level, whether they think one particular performance is better or worse than another by some metric.

In memory of Napster, whenever I use the search function of a file sharing network I am looking at for the first time, I search for ‘I Disappear’ by Metallica.

It wouldn’t be up to scratch for my work anymore, but I’ve found the 2015 MacBook Pros to be a good compromise between quality hardware and being able to run a full blown free Unix-like without any trouble. (By ‘my work’ I mainly mean including Citrix and Microsoft 365, so this precludes most free Unix-like anyway.)

It is available though in every package manager for macOS except the App Store, and any user of a script like this on macOS is probably also using Homebrew, macports, Nix, or srcpkg.

I’ve been using mise for a few months, it’s great. I got into it when I was looking for a way to consolidate my collection of dev tools including pyenv and jabba; I found that sdkman didn’t work out of the box for me for reasons I never bothered to figure out, and it’s basically a superset of the features of asdf.

What reason is that in this context?

I agree with that - directions for how to use Guix in practice, i.e. for someone who isn’t a GNU warrior using 15 year old hardware because you don’t need non-free blobs, need to be easier to come across.

I wouldn’t say it’s too ideological for someone who wants to get stuff done. To get stuff done with Guix, you just go do it and it won’t get in your way - the project channel and the nonguix channel won’t interfere with each other, they’re just different channels.

Directions for using Guix in practice (i.e. with some non-free software) could definitely be easier to find, especially if you start green and don’t know what you’re meant to be looking for. But the system won’t get in your way.

Important to note that it’s not hard or swimming against the current - you just use the nonguix channel, which has all of those things and is a perfectly acceptable use of the system (it’s what channels are for) - but it’s not in the default installation.

I really don’t understand why anyone would have their internal VC and CI/CD on the public Internet. This is exactly what VPNs are for.

This could be read as the solutions will be made available in other products, but there’s no substantial details about that anywhere that I’ve seen.

I think what this really demonstrates is just how much uncertainty around what Broadcom is actually doing with VMware under its new management …

According to VMware/Broadcom in the article: “All licensing options including Perpetual, Support & Subscription (SnS), SaaS/hosted and subscription, as well as all editions, suites and pricing metrics of each product, unless otherwise noted, are included in this announcement. These products are no longer available for purchase.”

It reads like these products and any way to purchase them have been axed. What am I missing? - if the expectation is that these products will be bundled into future product offerings, that’s a big if and if I’m not mistaken I don’t think we have any concrete information about that yet.

Maybe Space Cadet style modifiers will make a comeback!

AutoExpert[1] is indispensable to my use of ChatGPT now, and I’ve found that the GPT release is ‘better’ now than the custom instructions based release. If you haven’t used it I highly recommend it.

This looks neat and I hope people find it interesting. I’ve found the best todo app for me comes built into iDevices: Reminders.app. It’s got all the functions of this application, except maybe sophisticated snoozing (I haven’t tried NowDo and can’t say how good it is - snooze on Reminders.app is okay at best).

For one-time tasks, you can make a reminder with an alarm. For habits/recurring tasks, set up a recurring reminder. I assume you can have Focus-oriented lists, but I haven’t looked into it. It’s well integrated into iCloud of course.

Only thing it doesn’t do is give you a mail-to-task pipeline from Mail.app to Reminders.app. That’s a gap that I think needs to be filled.

Edit: nevermind, for mail-to-task just select some text from an email and do the Share… function to Reminders.app, it’ll provide a link back to the email in the reminder.

Red means stop, green means go - it’s pretty obvious signalling for anyone born in the last 100 years. I’m sure it’s not going to cause mass confusion and people walking in traffic. It’s just a neat thing to do.

The way to use discord/slack/steam/teams/[proprietary nonfree app that you can’t build yoirself] on Guix is to install Flatpak and run it in a sandbox.
