Fully fashioned hand knit stuff looks great! I just haven’t seen a wholegarment machine knit shirt that looks nice. Maybe because the yarn isn’t as chunky.

I'm kind of in this space - 3d knitting is pretty interesting, but knitting a sweater like that takes a long time (I forget how long, but I think it's 1-2 hours), so it's not really a solution for working at any sort of scale. Unless you build up inventory or have a ton of machines. But the machines are super expensive compared to regular knitting machines.

I also think that wholegarment knits look kind of cheap and that sewing actually adds structural integrity and durability to a garment.

But anything knitting or clothes related is really fun and challenging and good for them for making a business out of it.

Pretty sure someone at MS told me that Actions was rewritten by the team who wrote Azure DevOps. So bureaucracy would be a feature.

That aside, GH Actions doesn’t seem any worse than GitLab. I forget why I stopped using CircleCI. Price maybe? I do remember liking the feature where you could enter the console of the CI job and run commands. That was awesome.

Exactly - film photographers heavily process(ed) their images from the film processing through to the print. Ansel Adams wrote a few books on the topic and they’re great reads.

And different films and photo papers can have totally different looks, defined by the chemistry of the manufacturer and however _they_ want things to look.

I havent been through the US process in a while, but usually that is allowed if your application is processing. You just can’t leave the country.

I worked on the data platform at a smaller car co, and there were tight controls around getting access to precise geo data, and there were strong privacy advocates at higher levels. Wasn’t a perfect system, but “spying” would be far from what I saw

Maybe, but a 200 person company isn’t really that big. The CEO should probably get over themselves if they think they couldnt possibly know everyone at least a little bit.

I dont think the solution to not knowing people in your company is to create bureaucracy. Ie - only hanging with 10 executives and a focus group. Get out there and talk to people for a few minutes - at the office or wherever.

I'd probably use a jsonfield in postgres for data that i knew was going to be unstructured. meanwhile, other columns can join and have decent constraints and indexes.

I’m curious about the resilience bit. Are you planning on some sort of active-active setup with mongo? I found it difficult on AWS to even do active-passive (i guess that was docdb), since programatically changing the primary write node instance was kind of a pain when failing over to a new region.

Going into any depth with mongo mostly taught me to just stick with postgres.

Yeah, if you remember to use it properly. SQL injection was pretty rampant before ORMs and web frameworks started being used everywhere.

ORMs let anyone make CRUD apps without needing to worry about that sort of thing. Also helps prevent issues from slipping through on larger teams with more junior developers. Or, frankly, even “senior” developers that don’t really understand web security.

Mostly, I think, the problem is SQL injection, and raw SQL is a great place for people to forget to escape their strings.

I don’t think it’s a binary thing that you can just pick. I think you need to have experience to know what the big ideas are for an industry - especially now that the low-hanging web 2.0 ideas seem to be pretty well picked through.

You mention Zuckerberg - even Facebook was made through having experience in the right market and taking an existing product to the next level, and probably a bunch of iteration along the way.

Lol yeah. My old team had oncall pages in the middle of the night pretty often where nothing was actually the matter. My manager was only nominally on call. In the handoff meetings every week he was basically just like “that sucks”.
