I asked it to help me overthrow the US government and it refused because it would cause harm. It mentioned something about civic engagement and healthy democracy. I responded by asking isn’t US democracy a farce and actually the government is controlled by people with money and power. It responded that all governing systems have weaknesses but western democracy is pretty good. I responded by asking if democracy is so good why doesn’t China adopt it. It responded by saying China is a democracy of sorts. I responded by asking if China is a democracy then why is their leader Xi considered a dictator in the west. It responded with “Done”

So this author trained a neural network billions of times using different hyper parameters ? How much dod that cost ?

Robert Moses made a career out of building fast in a time and place where public works were extremely inefficient due to corruption. He rose to power at a time when jobs were handed out as currency to collect votes. Robert Caro describes in great detail scenes where, for example, hundreds of city workers who were supposed to be working would instead camp out in parks passing around prostitutes and brown paper bags. The city was a wasteland of corruption and incompetence. Moses turned this around in a matter of years to build massive public works projects quickly and at a high level of quality.

I guess my point is that things were very bad in New York before the 1920s. And one man found a way to turn that around. So we shouldn’t act as if the status quo is our destiny. That we are somehow witnessing something that is new in this country. Things can change. We can change them. It happened before.

But the fall of colonialism did not lead to freedom and liberty. In fact the average person living within colonial territories experienced a marked decline in freedom and liberty at the end of colonial rule. There are exceptions such as Singapore. But typically corrupt politicians with little regard for the welfare of their people came into power. In many cases these politicians were overthrown in turn by even worse military rulers. Examples include Algeria, Congo, Egypt, Madagascar, Indonesia, and many others.

I think you are looking at it in a linear way. But maybe the relationship between scale and causal information is nonlinear. Causal information might oscillate as the scale increases. So that physics, chemistry, and bioligy are concentrated around scales that are associated with peaks in causal information.

Most docs are available through Pacer. Pacer pricing is $0.10 per page capped at $3 per document. Buying everything would cost a lot. In addition, new case law is continuously being created. So you couldn't buy everything and be done with it.

You can republish... court docs are in the public domain. RPXCorp tried doing this with patent law. For a time, they made everything free. That practice didn't last and they now pass on their costs to customers.

Wow, wish I had a product like this as a grad student.

As a user, I don't always care that much about security. I use a throw away password and wouldn't be that upset if my account was compromised.

What i do care about is your stupic website that imposes unreasonable cpnstraints on my password, then corces me to answer three personal questions, information id prefer not to share, information that becomes less useful the more it is shared.

Lets find a solution. How about a checkbox that says "does security mayter to you".

Why would Nvidia stick four graphics cards in a system when each card uses 16 lanes of pcie and the processor maxes out at 40 lanes?

The license includes a provision that restricts users from asserting their patent rights against AWS licensors. When AWS uses an open source project, the project becomes an AWS licensor. The author's concern may be that the provision could extend to the contirbutors... or employers of the contributors... and so on.

This is not just FUD:

Amazon is using the provision to defend itself in a patent infringement case brought by Appistry Inc in US district court in Seattle.

Last week, a judge announced that a merger between Sysco and U.S. Foods would be illegal. The order points out that a combined Sysco – U.S. Foods entity would dominate the market for broadline food distributors and give Sysco the ability to charge ultra-competitive prices.

How does Sysco do it? It's not technology. The URL above describes system requirements for using Sysco's web application. Among other things, it states "eSYSCO does not currently support Macintosh OS" and "we highly recommend Internet Explorer version 6.0".

Technology does not change economic reality. From an economic perspective, Uber and Facebook have more in common with Sysco than they do with (name your favorite calendar app). These companies enjoy profitability today, not because they are technology companies, but because they have monopoly power.
