When you just have a few days that could be freed up to learn something, you don't want to commit to a 6-10 weeks courses like in Coursera or Udacity, so a shorter, denser course like this will fit perfectly, I think.

But, fonts look pretty awful in chrome and firefox.

Oops, almost immediately after I posted the comment, I saw the set your password option staring at me in the middle of the screen...ha

The website look great, after sign up I got email update almost immediately, but I don't seems to find a way to login directly from the website, the login button ask for password, which I never prompt to create, and if I choose forgot password and enter the email address, which is to receive a reset password I presume, it complain that it is a wrong email address.

Switching career and get a programming job, would love it to be something in Ruby on Rails. Be it permanent, remote, freelance, part time, whatever.

I tried different approaches this year, so far nothing come out of it. One gig was discontinued as the owner decided to switch to a local developer. The other project took half a year now and still no further progress from the owner. Just attended an interview which didn't work out.

As someone already mentioned, have fun with my son. Am teaching him Scratch at the moment, hopefully can complete a simple game by end of November :-)

Have you consider Penang island, it is not really isolated or exotic, but we have beautiful beaches here, and when you need a dose of civilization, it is just within 30 minutes driving distance, there are quite a few big companies here like Dell, Intel, Motolora. Standard of living is cheap. The island been ranked by Yahoo! Travel as one of the "10 Islands to Explore Before You Die". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang

Ya, your comment sound a lot like what my kid might be saying to me 20 years down the road, if I don't do thing right. I really don't want to sacrifice those precious moment of reading together, playing, etc etc with him.

That is why I try really hard to squeeze out time that wouldn't impact our relationship to work. It is hard but it is something I strive to do.

I don't really have an answer on the question, I am just another person starting out on freelance and struggling at the similar situation. I have a kid and a fulltime job as well. So I guess I am on the similar situation as yours. But I am already 37 ;-)

I tried not to sacrifice my time with kid and wife so I tried to wake up earlier at 4-5 a.m., spend 2-3 hours to work on things, then go to my fulltime work. I find this time of the day work better for me than if I stay up late to the night. You are alone, the air is fresh, and you are like having the whole world :-).

It is not easy, sometime I just couldn't wake up that early after the alarm went off. And then feeling guilty the whole day for not able to achieve the thing I plan to do. Sometime the alarm wake up my wife instead of me, and she couldn't fall asleep again after that, that is also a big problem.

I think focus, persistent and discipline is important. When we don't have the luxury of spending the whole day on the thing we need to work on, break a big task to smaller chunk that we can complete in shorter amount of time. Focus on small steps instead of climbing the big mountain.

well said, felt exactly the same about running. It is not as exciting as football(soccer I mean), or badminton, or any other ball game. But somehow, there is something about it that keep you coming back for more. Having say that, I have not run anything more than 5k for months now. Should pick it up again. This is really nothing to shout about compare to people pulling out weekend projects, selling off apps for millions, or coding something really cool at much much younger age. I am just starting out, hopefully there are bigger things down the road :-)
