"Hiring" them was just a PR tactic to keep Microsoft stock from tanking while they got this figured out.

Hey, I run the Growth team at Pinterest. I just wanted to comment on the article to be very clear and say we have never scraped Google search results either currently or at any time in the past.
Also biased because they are sampling people who are out and about. People who are out and about likely come into contact with more people than people who are staying at home and rarely going out.
"Up and to the right" is a relatively common business saying to indicate things are going well and that the chart for a metric (ex: revenue, users, etc) is going "up and to the right". The author made a play on this common business phrase by saying IBM's charts are going "down and to the right"
The reason some people label Brave as anti-gay is due to Brave's CEO and Founder Brendan Eich https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich
On March 24, 2014, Eich was promoted to CEO of Mozilla Corporation. Some employees of Mozilla Foundation tweeted calls for his resignation, with reference to his donation of $1,000 to California Proposition 8, which called for the banning of same-sex marriage in California. Eich stood by his decision to fund the campaign, but wrote on his blog that he was sorry for “causing pain” and pledged to promote equality at Mozilla. Some of the activists created an online campaign against Eich, with online dating site OkCupid automatically displaying a message to Firefox users with information about Eich's donation, and suggesting that users switch to a different browser (although giving them a link to continue with Firefox). Others at the Mozilla Corporation spoke out on their blogs in his favor. Board members wanted him to stay in the company in a different role. On April 3, 2014, Eich resigned as CEO and left Mozilla; in his personal blog, he posted, "under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader".
A direct listing is definitely not the most likely option. Only two major tech companies have done direct listings and there are also a lot more reasons you would want to do an IPO instead of a direct listing
1) Neither SPOT or WORK has done great, especially WORK
2) IPO allows you to choose your investors. This gives you the opportunity to choose major institutional investors that are in for the long term which will help reduce stock volatility.
3) Even if you don't need money, raising billions can open up a lot of opportunities for the business and give you a warchest to derisk potential market downturns.
If they do go public for $20B+ they that would be for more than Twitter and Facebook went public for
Lyft is IPOing at a higher valuation than Twitter, but Facebook went public at a valuation of $100B and raised $16B. FB's IPO was 5x bigger than Lyft's.
Stock market manipulation doesn't mean you have to manipulate the entire $20 trillion dollar US stock market, it just means you tried to manipulate the price of a specific stock. Super Micro's stock dropped 40% based on the story. Hypothetically if someone shorted the stock and then pushed to get a story published that they knew had no basis in evidence, they would have profited handsomely and that would have been stock market manipulation.
GDPR could be a factor since it required shutting down accounts of people aged 13-16 that did not have parental consent. Getting parental consent required having parents sign a form and send it in.
The problem is just 1 or 2 or even 10 people washing ashore on an island wouldn't be enough genetic diversity to sustain a population.
Correct, this is what everyone always hears about Burning Man. However, the idea that bartering happens at Burning Man is the most common misconnection. It is also how you can pick out that someone has never been to Burning Man (at least not recently).
I've been 5 years and from what I gather there was some bartering >10 years ago (not sure the exact date, but my impression is it was in the 90s). However, it shifted to a "gifting" economy where you give out gifts with no expectation of return and any Burner who hears that characterized as bartering would be quick to correct you.
Yes it is possible. Typically this usage of push is done more to pre-fetch content to improve load times, but it certainly can be used in the way you described.
I'm not trying to hide it. Like you said it is right in my HN profile.
I don't work on Pinterest's ads business and I'm not very familiar with that side of the company. I'm speaking as someone who runs ads on other sites to try and drive traffic to Pinterest.
Also, like the other poster said, an ad-hominem attack is a classic logic fallacy. You are criticizing who is saying it and did not bring up a single critique of my actual argument.
This new SDK doesn't help advertisers or users. Being able to assess the quality of users coming from different ad networks is crucial for any advertiser to assess the quality of their spend. Some ad networks might generate high quality legitimate users, while others are fraught with click fraud, or low quality users. Since an advertiser isn't able to tell which users came from an ad, no advertiser will adopt it.
If Apple really wanted to protect user privacy, they would provide something similar to the iAd Framework they provide for their own Apple App Store Ads, where the app can ping the iAd Framework to tell if the user installed the app from an Apple App Store ad and monitor the users long term engagement, while Apple handles all the attribution on their end. If Apple took the same approach they use for their own App Store Ads it would be a big step forward in helping protect user privacy and eliminate the need for all the fingerprinting, etc that some ad networks do.
The fact they didn't, I feel this is nothing more than a fluff PR move by Apple and does not seem genuine.
Pinterest | San Francisco, CA | Infrastructure Engineer (python) | Full-time | onsite
Pinterest helps over 150 million people discover ideas for their life. Whether it is recipes for dinner, planning their next vacation, or livening up their backyard, people use Pinterest to plan for the future.
We are hiring for many positions (to see other roles and apply, check out https://careers.pinterest.com/), but my team is specifically looking for two roles.
1) Backend Infrastructure engineer to work on scaling our email & notification systems. We deliver billions of emails/notifications a month and need someone who can be a technical leader on the team and help drive scaling of these platforms.
2) Localization engineer to help improve and build out our translation and localization framework. As the first full-time dedicated engineer on localization you will have a lot of ownership and be responsible for helping improve Pinterest's translatations for over 100 million users outside of the US.
If you're interested in either of the roles I listed, email me at jwegan@pinterest.com
Probably branding? If Uber/Lyft start operating a lot of Teslas, then they start to loose their brand allure and people start to view them as just taxis
I think this is a lesson in how optimizing for short term metrics can hurt long term engagement when you forget your core product value. I signed up for FB in 2004 and would have been classified as a core user since I would check the site frequently to see what people were up to and would often post updates myself.
However over the past 5 years FB has been trying to drive up engagement off the News Feed through allowing apps to publish to timeline, and encouraging people to post links to articles and videos, etc. For me, Facebook today fundamentally is no longer fulfilling its core product value of helping me stay connected to what is going on in my friends lives. Apps like Snapchat have now taken that role because they are able to deliver on that value in a way Facebook is no longer able to.
She had nothing to do with coming up with the financial engineering. From the article itself it says the hedge fund Starboard Value came up with the move and has been pressuring the board to do it for months.
That is incorrect. The shares of Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital are shown both in the "5% Stockholders" and again shown in the "Executive Officers and Directors" section since both firms also hold seats on the board. Also, investors holding <5% stake are not represented.
The real math is 33.6% to investors holding a >5% stake, 38.8% to execs & directors, and 27.6% not represented (probably a mix of investors and the employee option pool)
I think at least Facebook's usage would fall under the category of facilitating inter-app communication. They just communicate with almost every app out there.
As someone who regularly uses utm parameters, this has to be the most pathetic attempt at trolling I've ever seen. When looking at data you usually just pay attention to the top performers, not the stuff at the bottom of the list with 1 or 2 clicks. Even if you did notice the troll parameters you would just shrug your shoulders and move on without spending more than a second of your day thinking about it (which is much less effort than the person who pulled of this "troll" put into it).
Furthermore, it looks like PUT & DELETE were never part of Webdav (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV).
FYI, for people using less than 1 TB of data, Vertica does have a free community edition. I used Vertica at my last job and it was blazingly fast compared to Hive (like 5x to 10x faster).
The plan is to work on open sourcing it later this year.
I open sourced something very similar a couple years ago. It is basically an error monitoring service that uses git blame to figure out which developer last touched the code that caused the exception. It then sends that developer a stack trace, along with all the values of all the variables in the stack frame and additionally the HTTP request if it is running as a django/pylons middleware.
I actually used something similar to this (but not as sophisticated) at a previous startup to generate recommendations of people to invite to the app because the app's target demographic was women ages 20-40.

HN very much has a hive mind. HN used to have great articles all the time. Now it feels like reddit. Every day tons of great articles slip into obscurity while HN upvotes the meme of the day (Snowden, NSA, 2048, etc).
I prefer the simpler:
class A(object):
def __init__(self, x, y):
self.__dict__.update((k,v) for k,v in locals().items() if k != 'self')I don't think she did that after being rejected. Based on the line below, I think she came up with the custom resume, sang a song, wrote an iPhone app as part of the application process.
