We're a Khosla Ventures backed company working to revolutionize agriculture by providing a quantitative, information-driven approach to farm management practices. Our first measurement systems are currently being deployed with our initial customers in California, Iowa, and Illinois, and we have a great need for good developers to help us build up our platform to manage and analyze the information generated by these systems.

Very cool, event-based photo sharing with easy group sharing is a good idea. Two quick suggestions -- you shouldn't have to give a name to each photo you upload, and you should look at the exif data for the image orientation so pictures don't display sideways.

We use python for pretty much everything in my research group -- high-level scripting of simulations written in C; controlling experiments over serial, GPIB, usb; and data analysis and plotting for publications. I used Matlab for several years prior, but got really annoyed by the limits of the language when you try to do anything beyond matrix manipulation. Python + scipy + pylab is a pretty effective replacement for matlab prototyping and data analysis, with a much better general purpose language and FFI. Anything that needs to be fast you can write in C/C++ and wrap with swig or ctypes so that you can still use a high-level language to run all your simulations, and do the data analysis as well.

I think both the restaurant suggester (my vote) and contact maker are interesting ideas and would be very useful if done right, but also probably wouldn't pay for 'em. The restaurant suggester could be easily add supported and is probably a bit more tractable.
