Parking tickets aren't meant to be an income stream

Some DMVs are selling customer data to private companies. People who are supposed to wear ankle bracelets are charged rent by private companies with govt contracts to do so. Those are just two examples that I could think of, without even googling. They are gonna do whatever they can, for revenue.

A good percentage of the population believes government should be run like a business, without understanding the implications. Also people don't like taxes, even justified ones. All this leads parking tickets style situations.

Reasons to get a degree:

Immigration - degrees help a lot, if you are trying to get a work visa.

Resume filtration in big companies - many companies have policies that they will consider someone for a software development position, only if they have a degree. You probably do not want to work for such companies, at least not for long.

Learning theory - personally I find it easier to learn theory in a classroom from a teacher, with peers.

A lot depends on the school and the curriculum too. If your goal is for immigration, get any approved degree from any school and be done with it. If you truly want to learn, then it would make sense to look for tough courses from reputed universities.

Everyone's situation is unique. It is kinda hard to give a generic answer.

I guess it is a difficult position to be in, especially in the current administration. If you leave, you know your replacement is likely going to be unqualified, yes men. If you stay, you conscience will bother you and you won't be able to do much good anyway.

I am actually interested in what goes into building such a product. It would take tremendous resources to crawl millions of websites, not to mention fingerprinting tons of libraries and accounting for all the edge cases...

Why use FB at all? I understand they have the audience, but if they treat you so poorly to the point of bankruptcy, what is the point? Aren't you encouraging bad behaviour by sticking with them?

I constantly see Norway/Denmark/Sweden/Switzerland at the top of good lists, like this rsf one. Never been there, but a bit jealous (and happy for those living there) that other countries that have insanely more resources at their disposal are unable to copy these tiny countries.

How long did it take for you to adjust to the layout?

This makes me soooooooo mad. Instead of LAMP, I spelled out Linux/Apache... etc in my resume. One recruiter spent 10 minutes arguing with me that LAMP is not the same as Linux...

Why do they deserve 50% of the billing rate (they can't even bother spending 30 seconds to google and note down what these terms mean)? Is their service that valuable? Heck, compared to them even the freelance websites that take 20% (Fiverr etc) seem like saints.

Another recruiter changed my resume without my knowledge. I found out during the interview. All kinds of shady stuff going on with these people.

Or educate users to pay for quality and make quality websites/products so we don't have to depend on advertising. This would be insanely difficult to pull off, but it is at least worth a try.

The incumbents have trained users to expect everything on the internet for free. People think they pay $75 (or whatever their internet connection costs) and that should cover everything - news, search, email...

How many people even pay for super important stuff like email? No wonder ads are everywhere, like bad smell.

There is a whole cottage industry on giving advice, coaching etc (not talking about this article, just in general). Maybe most of the advice is well intentioned. But everyone's situation, skills, motivations, drive etc are different. What works for one person may not work for another.

We can take general advice from successful people, I guess (especially those who has had recent success). But more than that, it is on the individual to tailor what he/she learned according to their needs.

After listening to whole bunch of people giving advice and trying many of them, I haven't found much that can be applied as is.

Comments are not as important as search, I guess. If the site has tons of pages, not having search might be annoying to the user

If there is one thing I have learned, it is this - most people don't care about anything other than themselves. At least in part, it is not their fault - they have their own crappy life to deal with, so why bother having good intentions and care for others (work or otherwise)?

It is tolerable most of the time, except when it comes to powerful jobs like cops/doctors/lawyers etc where even a small mistake can wreck someone's life. I had a colleague whose lawyer made a mistake while filing paperwork. He lost his visa and move back to his home country, all because a lawyer (well paid one at that) couldn't bother to do simple paper work correctly. I don't know if it was incompetence or I don't care attitude, my colleague's life is ruined either way.

politicians holding speeches

Curious about this. I can count on one hand the politicians I truly admire/respect, including the world leaders (among the ones I am familiar with, and I am familiar with a few). Why do you think politicians are getting better with speeches? All I see are useless, meaningless, confusing soup of words that they blabber (with few exceptions)

I'm thinking about picking up some freelance work in this area. Not really sure where to start

Ironically a large part of my current job is writing code that runs on/interacts with a no/low code platform.

Could you please elaborate? What tools do you interact with? Is this mostly backend work, getting the data out of no code tools for further processing?

I recently tried TDD. It was fun for a while, but it took too much time writing tests for mundane things. I am not convinced about 100% coverage etc.

For me the biggest takeaway was the way I was organizing my code. I work on a 15 year old web application with lots of legacy stuff, so it isn't easy to make changes fast. New code that I write depends on old code, so I am constrained a bit. Even still, I found marked improvement in my code structure after trying TDD. I do not know whether I'll stick with TDD, but I definitely will remember the code organizing lessons it taught me

I've a macbook air which is 9 years old, which never gave me a problem until now even after tons of abuse. My work laptop is Dell, about 4 years old - wifi drops at random, battery has swollen etc.

Maybe the reason Apple customers don't care is because their machines give them less trouble? And they have more disposable income?

Not defending Apple here (my next computer is definitely not going to be Apple), just trying to understand how Apple users think.

The thing that sucks is other industries/companies copying Apple. Lenovo computers are increasingly becoming harder to repair. Expensive, big machines like tractors are being locked down etc. Samsung made fun of apple when they removed the headphone jack but now Samsung and everyone else is doing the same, trying to squeeze more money out of the customer, airpods style.

Maybe we should make a list of repair friendly, environment friendly and customer friendly hardware and stick only to those.
