I'm from FlightAware...

Our network ADS-B ground stations is one of our fastest-growing data sources, but we also get data from the FAA, other national aviation authorities (UK, Australia, Eurocontrol, Central America, etc.), directly from airlines, satellite avionics providers, etc. Live flight tracking is a deceptively difficult problem - on the surface it seems as if you could simply collect data and regurgitate it (that's what I thought before I came onboard), but there is actually an enormous amount of processing and inference based on sometimes incomplete, inaccurate, and conflicting data, even for mainline airline flights. That's not even getting into GA or flights in areas of the globe where we lack complete coverage. It's a really interesting set of problems!

Interesting. Is there an option to export everything? I looked around but couldn't find it. That's a critically important feature, since the idea is that this would replace a photo album (to some extent).

I recently had a daughter, and created a private jekyll-powered blog to share photos, etc. with family and friends. I went to all that trouble because:

1. I want it private. Facebook is creepy. 2. I wanted complete control over the data. Years from now, I want to be absolutely sure those memories are still accessible.

Agreed. In the past, I've used hipmunk to find a flight, and once I found myself forwarded to Orbitz, went to the airline's site and looked up the same flight manually.

Notational Velocity is great. Just point it to a dropbox folder and set it to use plain text files and you're set with syncing. There's even an equivalent program for Windows - ResophNotes http://www.resoph.com/ResophNotes/Welcome.html.

I prefer using a program like Password Safe (http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/), and use a safe password that's a long sentence (with punctuation). Then I can use arbitrarily long and complex passwords for all my accounts, and not have to worry about memorizing them individually. The password safe can even be synced across computers using Dropbox.
