The tech is proprietary, and not that fun to work with.

As someone who has worked extensively with Salesforce, the cult like fanbase is annoying. I'll be the first to admit the tech is underwhelming and in many cases nowhere near other modern technology.

True. But Salesforce allows fairly non-technical people to build fairly robust applications with very limited CS training. If I were interested in getting a technical job but had no experience, I'd consider becoming a Salesforce administrator as a way to get paid to learn to code on the job. [1]

You can build something that is complex and scalable without any programming experience. And what you build will be supported for the next ten years. It's not a terrible proposition for most businesses - especially outside of the Silicon Valley bubble.

Some advice that has been helpful for me doing enterprise sales:

"Your job as a sales person is to find the 20 people in this town who have a $100k problem."

You may meet a lot of people who have a $100 or a $1,000 or a $10,000 problem along the way. Be honest that it's not the right time to work together and move on (for now).

It's tempting to want to work with these customers but in the early days, you want to find people with a really big problem. As you grow you'll be able to expand your reach.

This is hard advice to follow because leads are so hard to come by at first and because you want to help everyone if you're passionate about what you're building.

Keeping prices high helps with this because it will disqualify a lot of people that would probably waste your time anyway.

I have avoided seeing the movie because the book is so good. If you haven't read it I highly recommend it.

I think the lack of a detail is a big part of the article's point: it remains hard to know why retail businesses succeed or fail today. That's pretty significant in and of itself.

I absolutely agree with this sentiment. However, my real goal for this project (apart from learning to code it) was to place a slight barrier between me and a bunch of mindless consumption. It's pretty easy to wake up in the morning, check email, check HN, etc.

I just wanted something to slow me down each morning and bring the focus back to producing. I also have it block me at about 6pm so I have to reflect on my day before going home and reading articles.

Currently you will have to open a different browser if you want to google something. I'm considering adding a blacklisting/whitelisting option but I was going for minimalism with v1.

I am in the same boat. I started learning web development about 6 months ago.

The best way to learn is by making things. Many of my friends that have been interested in learning to program and started using resources like codeacadmey or the w3schools tutorials have ended up discouraged. I think they assumed that those resources were designed such that you'd be a programmer as soon as you diligently completed each lesson. My friends that assumed that ended up bored and moved on to other things.

It's best to follow your curiosity. Work on projects even if other people are out there doing the same thing better. I view everything as a learning project. My first projects were http://roommater.us and http://essayr.com.
