I suppose Auracast could be used for that, which is a broadcast audio feature of Bluetooth Low Energy [1].

My Bluetooth pods have it. I'm not sure how well it's supported, I don't think I've ever entered a place that uses it (or I didn't notice), so I could never try it.

I suppose it was rare enough and somewhat fun in the 90s. Maybe that guy was doing this for others to enjoy as well, or to appear singular (whether it worked or not).

Nowadays it wouldn't appear particularly exotic (portable speakers are ubiquitous) and people playing loud music (from speakers or phones) seem to do this for themselves without caring about the surrounding people, that's just highly egotistical and self-centered. It's usually not music I personally like too.

That's not fun, it's just annoying. There's already too much noise in our cities.

But if you do it right, playing (singular) music for others, reading the room and all, I'm sure it can still work.

It's likely not performance concerns. I suppose she just monitors her logs meticulously and notices stuff. 404 errors can be a witness of a broken link she should fix on her site or get fixed on external sites. She probably looks for them and notices URLs that look credible. She might still look for broken RSS readers too. Or just suspicious things.

Users of these products are also responsible. They are the ones deciding to use them. To the extent, of course, that their knowledge is obviously limited. And to the extent that they are also subject to the competition.

The problem here is that nobody is accountable for the externalities in this economic system where you can do damage as long as you have enough money to throw away toward this damage. Anthropic, xAI, OpenAI and Google obviously don't care. Public powers mostly don't (regulate) neither. If their potential users don't, who is going to?

The sad state of affairs is that nobody relevant cares, as usual.

Your comment focuses on usage. The post argues that we can't say "it's just a tool" because there are inherent traits that don't depend on usage.

You touch something there: some of us think that simply using LLMs at all encourages developing / spreading this tech that inherently causes too much harm.

This is what is being refuted. The argument is that there is, in fact, inherent badness in the tool, which doesn't quite depend on how the tool is used (or at least non neutral implications that don't depend on usage).

"Everything really". This industry is still pretty much a cash and planet burning grift that hasn't figured out being profitable yet. We don't even know whether it will cost more to spend tokens or pay an actual human being with critical thinking included for free for useful work in the medium term.

We can start considering to reconsider when we have the begining of an answer to that first fatal issue.

So much brain power, including mine, wasted to this stuff instead of useful or enjoyable stuff, that's quite sad.

Maybe we can throw that away and focus the useful stuff that doesn't try to get you hooked all the time.

It's the "Bun is better in Rust" section which is misleading, where most things could have been done in Zig as well with a comparable amount of work (if we don't count the rewrite itself).

This section can also give the impression that the LLM rewrite itself brought those improvements, which it didn't.

Nor the LLM rewrite nor Rust in itself brought these improvements, extra work did.

The fuzzing thing also does looks bad and nothing was refuted: just by reading the bun post one could think they've been fuzzing for a long time, but it started only a few months before the rewrite, which makes it almost irrelevant: the result never shipped, or only for a short time. The whole thing looks like this: technically correct so hard to criticize because people can tell you "well no, the post doesn't say this!", but deceitful, with important omissions.

But you can state that factually without making it into a personal attack. It would even be more convincing.

I was just saying that you are probably less at risk of triggering people if you don't politely lie about stuff they make. I don't 100% agree with Andrew's response and I think he should apologize or explain more.

If you don't intend to write misleading stuff that makes Zig look bad when you leave and if you avoid ghosting the Zig foundation in scheduled meetings you had with them, I suppose you should be good.

It's not really this though. It's about the user leaving throwing misleading shade. Politely, of course.

Andrew is bitter (or something related) about this whole situation, that's no question, he writes it in his updated post (he doesn't say "bitter", but he speaks about unprocessed emotions).

People are entitled to their emotions. The question is whether the bitterness is warranted. I think it is.

But that hit piece would be an answer to the (multi-billion dollar) studio saying how much better the result is after the rewrite to Unreal, except it's not because Unreal is better (which it could be btw, or not, or more probably it depends on the use case), it's because the studio worked hard to make it look better, which they could have done without the rewrite.

Anthropic does this to sell LLM rewrites and make them look better than they actually are, Zig being the source language, they are a collateral victim of that misleading advertisement. Of course it's unfair to them and of course they should highlight this.

I have a counter proposition: don't fall for this constant suggestion that LLMs are an unavoidable future would you leave the techbros alone now pretty please, relentlessly keep reminding that we still don't think it's acceptable so people don't start to think this is okay since nobody complains anymore.

It's uniquely hard to get rid of Android (when you don't consider iOS as an option, because possibly the remedy would be worse than the issue). A degoogled Android is already a good step.

I'm as little reliant on proprietary services as possible and I'll jump to Linux mobile (having used a pinephone for one year as my main phone, I know it'll be comfortable for me) when a convincing phone that's not very expensive given the outdated hardware it has and that doesn't rely on an Android base can run it smoothly enough, but that phone doesn't exist yet.

Alternatives include not having a smartphone but the network effect and the expectations on you having one are quite strong.

The Fairphone 5 I have is very close to run PostmarketOS well, I have hope but for now few but critical features are missing.
