We recently renegotiated our rent for a 2br apartment in SF about 7% down after having begun our lease in March. Used a 2 prong tactic of mentioning some frustrations that we've had thus far as well as offering to extend our lease. We didn't have much leverage, but offering something in exchange for the rent reduction was probably what convinced them.

This is pretty common for some of the larger tech companies. While some Bay Area startups do pay a bit less in exchange for equity, it's still tough getting talent given all the competition.

For startups, I think the key is to really stay as lean as possible before hiring at all.

For those of you full-time employees out there, you may have experienced a time when you weren't actually sure whether your title reflected your day-to-day performance. I wanted to build Eng Quiz because more information means more leverage, whether you're negotiating a raise or interviewing for a new role.

There are tons of things to do to make this more useful, so would appreciate any feedback!

If you're working with Postgres then check out https://github.com/sosedoff/pgweb for connecting to a remote server. It supports table data viewing as well as SQL queries, but doesn't provide the same chart capabilities.

The aggregate HN community seems to be reacting pretty negatively, but I see a lot of value in high-level "magic" tools (like this and Otto) that abstract away configuration for developers. While everyone else commenting is likely more experienced and thus feels more comfortable setting up the required config files, I am still a relatively novice web developer. Tools such as Nanobox and Otto provide a way for people like me to start using the right dev environment management processes without being overwhelmed.

Just started using Weave (http://weave.in/) around SF and there are tons of founders/tech enthusiasts on the network that might be willing to grab a coffee with you :)
