Why?

Think of a guitar string. It makes noise as it vibrates. As you age, your airway/soft pallet/esophagus loses tone and breathing in and out causes vibrations which you hear as a snore.

What To Do About It?

Health:

Snoring is not a medical issue but is an indicator of a future issue - sleep apnea. This is when your airway closes all the way. It is silent because no air is moving through your airway. This continues until your blood oxygen levels drop to a degree that your body wakes itself up to restore airway rigidity and oxygen flow. This is sleep apnea and can happen 10s to 100s of times an hour. This is like overclocking the computer of you and creates organ strain which most often will first manifest as unhealthy blood pressure issues or blood sugar issues.

If you are snoring, get a home sleep test and determine if you've progressed to apnea. Its cheap, fast and its medical efficacy is equivalent for testing Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

There are other kinds of rare apnea conditions but Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the vast majority of cases.

If you have sleep apnea, the leading treatment is a CPAP machine. Dental devices ( thedaybreak.com) and weight loss pills (GLP-1s) are rising in popularity. Apnimed.com is in third stage clinicals for sleep apnea pill.

While there's a low chance, visit your ENT and make sure you don't have anything swollen our outside of normal in your airway. If you are allergic to something in your home this can also cause the swelling and snoring and reducing the triggers can reduce or eliminate the snoring. Unlikely but it happens.

Reduce/Eliminate The Sound:

1. If snoring is soft pallet related, pull your jaw forward with a dental device.

3. EPAP devices. They create back pressure when breathing, largely uncomfortable but will open the airway if you can tolerate them.

4. Positional devices or adjustable bed bases. Anything from tennis balls stitched into your shirt to Rx devices that sense your position and alert/encourage you to move positions. Largely a delaying action. If you are sleeping upright in a lazyboy or similar to sleep, it is a bigger deal than changing positions and you need to get checked out for apnea.

5. Mouth tape. This is largely a bad idea and I caution you against it. If you must, monitor your O2 levels when using it with a finger pulse ox.

I believe that this comment is unintentionally the reason healthcare is broken in America.

America is capitalist and federalist. That means either hospitals are for profit entities, non-profit entities or government owned entities.

Ducks quack, for profit entities attempt to grow profits, non-profit entities attempt to grow donors and government entities attempt to keep the things way they were yesterday.

As a society, we can pick which models we allow and in which allocation, but we can't ask a duck to be a swan - each option has positives and negatives.

When we ask for the positives without the negatives, then complain when the inevitable negatives come, is the fault with the model or with our expectations?

The better way is to iterate and grapple with the rewards in the system and where transparency should be forced or legislated. Change the incentives and you'll change the behavior. Unfortunately, you will also encounter new and unexpected negative effects...see: ducks quack.

I joined and couldn't see my own face or bubble. I clicked around trying to figure that part out but didn't get it.

I saw other people could easily publish content to the board and I think that part is a step forward. I could have clicked chess/gif and posted something but exited there.

At a poker table you get a high number of events to check against but a presidential election is only once every 4 years.

I wonder how accurate the local elections are vs the national? If neither is accurate, then that's a strong case for your point of view and a change in methodology.

The book Thinking in Bets points out that predictions are given with a % of certainty. If I say X party will win at Y% and Z party wins, it doesn't mean the model is broken.

I'm a grump but this isn't $9.2k in income, it is $9.2k in revenue before expenses and taxes.

That said, you're out there doing the work, trying things and being transparent to others - good on you.

1. Good idea. My wife and I are going to <place X> soon. Scratched an itch.

2. The "share" link was easy but you should have asked me for her email to build the network.

3. The adding of categories of things was intuitive and easy.

Dislikes

1. When searching for the place the search term I typed in didn't change into the data that populated with my search. I did it again to make sure I did it right. Update the text box with the full format name airline style.

2. The itinerary inspirations provided lists of things to see and do (good) but no reviews and no way to click for more outside your site. I popped another google tab to copy and paste.

I find the Overcast app pretty workable.

In your blather situation, you'd just set forward skip to 30s and hit it a few times. Podcasts are for profit and so if you aren't paying...you are the product. I don't think a bookmark after the ads is going to be a thing.

I do like the idea of having content areas and being able to navigate between them! Why on earth not indeed!

I wish Overcast did a better job of queuing and making fresh content available in an intuitive way. I've gone so far as to watch youtube videos to see if I'm doing it right or not...

I love Stripe and am an early and long time customer.

Everything about them is beautiful, simplified and easy - except Radar.

For all the blogs and good intentions of the team, Radar to me means an email 3 days after I've processed and shipped an order telling me it may be fraudulent, followed a month later by a reminder "I'm sorry, you lost your credit dispute for $X" email, followed by a $15 charge by Stripe for no error or bad faith on the part of my company.

When Radar isn't busy sending me reminders that we're having money stolen from us, they are hard at work denying legit charges and sending customers down a Kafka-esque rabbit hole, hell bent on seeing exactly how much friction can be introduced into our website's buying process by a single third party service.

Stripe didn't create the fraud and they are taking on a difficult and emotional part of their business, which is commendable, but it must be said:

1. The false positive rate of Radar is so bad that it renders the product worse than useless - worse because it initially provides a false hope.

2. You can't disable some parts of Radar. Better to throw the whole thing into the sea and use a plugin then be forced into some parts of this.

I know there are good people trying hard to build this product well. Some of the people on it serviced our account in the early days. They had a vision of a better way and they made it real. My hats off to them. Now, people I respect, I have hard words and a hard truth to impart to you:

You are not delivering the value you claim to provide. Do not continue iterating. Discontinue the product. Allow others who focus on this to do it well. You are great at what you do but you are frustratingly, annoyingly, arrogantly bad at this. It pisses us all off to be forced to use it and to be told again and again how great it is going to be or how fixed it is this time. I don't want to engage with Stripe on Radar or "learn more about it", I don't want to be interviewed by you so you can better understand the voice of customer, there is no email or back channel thing you can send to make this better. The beauty of Stripe is that it "just works" but Radar does not just work - and it never will.

A group of workers who weren't making money decided to get together to increase the ask of the owner of the business. That's a big red flag that says "we aren't united in fixing what's wrong here". At that point, the situation is impossible. There's little to no chance of a path to profitability. This isn't some 100 year old car making giant who can be abused for decades and still remain standing, its a money losing small media outlet fighting for survival and relevance.

That same group of workers can start another similar business under their control tomorrow. I bet they won't. They want "someone else" to fix their problems. One of their problems appears to be math.

There were real problems unions solved in this country. True "we own the store, we own your house, we've blocked the exits, your boss has a gun pointed at you" abuses. This is so comically far from that. The only joke left in the story is the outrage of the article's author for not seeing the obvious, inevitable conclusion that he and his peers forced.

I'd like my 20 minutes back from having to have read and responded to this junk. There are serious liberal viewpoints put forth on HN but Mr Hamilton Nolan, yours sir, isn't one of them.

We should help because they are people hurting but lets not mischaracterize the dynamics of PR/USA relations.

The original "echo chamber" memo was written clearly and respectfully. The message was set out to encourage debate and make progress toward understanding. This wasn't a fox news drive buy, trump rally or some alt right rant. It was a real call for discussion.

Google comes back and makes it clear that this isn't a discussion and isn't discussable. What? Google's response is that this is per se wrong. And what do we do with a valid and stronger position as free people in a free society? We put out our logic, blowing away the other idea with a rational counter argument.

What we don't do is what Google is doing, what our society has been doing and what it looks destined to continue to do for some time - declare we are absolutely right without debate and start using the force available to us to push our point instead of reason.

Yup, Google is a company. They get to do this. Remember when Google stood up to China? Man I was proud of that. Google meant a bigger thing then, a commitment to intellectual discourse.

Another way to title this would be "Taxi Services Now 10% Cheaper Because of Uber" or more aggressively "The 10% Taxi's Used To Take Now Returned To Customers In The Form Of Lower Prices".

Suppliers start having trouble getting paid. The business announces a hiring spree. Four months later, they shut down.

This is manic. If you can build a company and take it public, make what looks like a solid set of moves to get into a nice position and grow that position in revenue terms - what went wrong? What is the lesson? I'm assuming the CEO knew the ropes, perhaps not? Seems unlikely.

I suspect their top line was good but their margins were negative. That, something out of left field or foul play of some kind. Its noted they had lawsuits pending, which I suspect relate to collections.

I know that walmart recently purchased shoebuy. So shoes.com's competition, already stiff, may have been overwhelming.

I use DDG as primary but any time the search results aren't relevant, I fall back to Google. I fall back a lot right now and I think this is the area for DDG to focus in.

I grant you that oil is found in and around the earth we all share. However, value comes in when you extract it into a usable form for others. I think you have to consider this value add when discussing resources. If you do, it tracks my original comment.

Money comes from value and value comes from somewhere. If you receive a redistribution, you've not created value but you've received it. That's "free money".
