This is terrible advice, and simply wrong. I lived and worked in Germany as a self employed person with primarily one client for 2.5 years - along the way I properly maintained my business and taxes in a good and legal standing. I am not an accountant or a lawyer, and this is not professional advice. What the commenter here is referring to is a specific situation called "Scheinselbstständigkeit" which roughly translates to "fake/sham self employment". If you work as a contractor for just one company for a long time the tax office can audit and determine you're really an employee. This is not a simple decision however and many factors go in to it. Also, the decision is made by your regional tax office and they each have their own standards. In Hamburg for example, I was told it wouldn't even be a question until 4 years time. Even then there are a lot of additional circumstances which must be taken into account. Ideally the self employed would form a German LLC, (GmbH) and make themselves an employee of the company. The best advice, as always, is to speak with a locally certified professional! and not strangers on the internet.

Within the constraints of the technology (e.g. >2GB files) isn't FAT32 already this? I can plug it into my Apple, Windows, and Linux devices and it will just work.

Reactors are often quoted in MW-thermal vs. MWe (electric). They also mention there are 2 steam turbines. Here's my analysis. 2x 380MWt. They have two for redundancy. Then 1x 380MWt, assume 33% conversion efficiency => 125MWe. 80k SHP implies after losses, guess 85% conversion efficiency, 80k/0.85 HP to MWe ~= 70MWe. Which leaves 55MWe left over. That's still a lot of power, but it puts this closer to realistic I think.

I wish there was more discussion about how society should recognize and handle this. Much of modern society is orthogonal to parenting and raising children, I would love to see it addressed more in the public discourse -- maybe even "disrupted" by tech so we can be thrice better parents, citizens, and workers.

This is missing a few important points.

1. The 15% of income has a cap. It's something like after 60k EUR in wages you don't pay anymore. Also, only 7.5% comes out of your paycheck, the employer pays the other half. When I was there a few years ago I was self employed so I had to pay "both sides". It would've worked out to roughly 750EUR/month for health insurance which had _0 deductible_ and _0 coinsurance_ for doctors visits or ER care and would've covered my entire family no matter on my children I had. Compare that with a typical HDHP family plan offered in the US and you're looking at $400/mo in premiums, with a $3k deductible and max OOP of $6k. The final cost is comparable.

2. The 15% is only if you participate in the public system - the private is not tied to your income.

I mostly agree but I want to nitpick.

One of the areas I've heard should be improving with 5G is latency. On 4G we're talking O(10ms)? which on 5G, so says the marketing, should be O(1ms). If this is true, it will make a noticeable impact on the responsiveness of web driven apps (aka almost all apps) as well as video/audio chat liveness. Was this oversold to me (highly probable)?

I would not suggest pricing things in this way. The analysts should look at what competing products cost, and where is ours unique and what advantage does it give the airline. Convert that advantage over competing products to a dollar amount. Add that to the price of the competing product. Subtract some so you always win when the customer does their own cost/benefit analysis.

If you price your products based on your costs, you're either losing profit-margin or sales (sales, because you're making the wrong thing at the wrong price).

Isn't that kind of exactly how a "nimble startup" would want to operate? Push push push, and then when it doesn't work "pivot". At least that's what a startup would say in a very grandiose blog post about "strengthening our core and starting a new exciting chapter." It seems to me like the Microsoft Edge team is trying to operate as nimbly as they can inside the giant and were given latitude to do so. I say good on them for regcognizing the situation and having the fortitude to make the decision that is probably best for MS's customers.

As someone who lived abroad for 6+ years then returned to my home country happily married I want to give out this advice: if living/working abroad from your home country and having your partner with you is an important part of your life plan - get married now. This includes couples who have the same citizenship but might go abroad for work/travel for an extensive period of time. While many countries have domestic partnerships, and other forms of legal "pair-hood" you could also theoretically use, it's often not recognized across country lines and many times can slow down and really complicate paperwork because foreign jurisdictions don't understand the law in other countries. Without it your ability to get travel/resident/work documents in foreign countries together can spiral out of control or not happen at all. Then you would have to choose between your life goal, dream job, or significant other.

This is one of those things many people I've spoken with never considered or knew about (why would you!) until it was too late and -- had they been "married" for 2/3/5 years or some threshold, everything would've been a cakewalk.

Then I guess I have a "fully developed adult brain" (whatever that is) and certainly couldn't fully understand all the effects of taking out a $120k loan to take a risk on a degree in a subject I don't know (by definition, otherwise why am I going to school for it?) - let alone long term risks and opportunity cost assessments.

I think it puts anyone looking to go to college and 'move up the ladder' in a very difficult position.

How does buying something indicate your intent, wants, or wishes? If I buy a can of spray-paint, the store has no idea if I am using it to paint my child's bicycle, tag graffiti, use it as a weapon and hit someone on the head, or as part of a wonderful "Rube Goldberg" device which at the end an implement hits the sprayhead which sprays through a bright white light as part of performance art.

Another example, a true story: yesterday I visited an ice cream store with my friend. She wanted a scoop with chocolate sauce, and I wanted just a scoop. 1 scoop was 4.29+tax. A 3 scoop sundae with chocolate, nuts, and strawberry-sauce was 7.98+tax. Even though we only wanted 2 scoops we got the sundae because it was cheaper and scooped the strawberry-sauce off and into the trash (crazy I know, we don't like it). Did we defraud the ice cream store?

People buy "more than they need" all the time, and purchasing a good provides no intent as to what one wants or how they wish to use it.

Evidently there are many people who agree with you. One of them founded, and now many support an awesome foundation called the Delancey Street Foundation. It is in San Francisco (and now other places). They provide housing and employment, via their own internal businesses, which employ those they are helping to reintegrate into society. Their cafe and restaurant are really great if you're in the neighborhood in San Francisco! Their story of starting with a small house and growing into a block-sized complex is really inspiring!

Excuse my ignorance, can someone explain how they are going to pay for this? My internet experience in the last months has been mostly articles about how they would keep enough cash with one factory? Then others about Elon said no more cash raises, etc... Even if they start turning a profit on their cars, that isn't going to magically give them the millions (billions?) needed for a new factory.

Though I think the unstated single most important selling point for the Lime scooter over the electric bike is that you don't need to deal with the homicidal, low awareness, little education American driver and the abhorrent infrastructure (and policies) that enable them.

Except you do some places. In San Francisco it is illegal to ride an e-scooter on the sidewalk. You are supposed to ride in the bicycle lanes.

I like how it is done by the utility in San Francisco. Depending on the size of your place, and your main method of heating (electric or not), there are tiers setup (based on average weather in each month) where the first X kWh are the cheapest and correspond to what they think a dwelling of that size should need. Then the next Y kWh are about 30% more expensive, then after that there is a final tier which is 60% more expensive. In this way by saving energy you save doubly - you pay for less kWh, and what you do pay for is on a cheaper tier. I think this seems like an easy way to handle these miners, while allowing non "electricity-based" to continue unimpeded.

I think we as a nation should consider this an issue of national security. This type of financial instability in such a large percentage of the population could lead to making short-sighted or bad decisions in tough times, increased violence, increased rates of incarceration (both of those increasing the cost of government for all), among many other things. The reasons for it are multi-faceted I'm sure. I hope voters and politicians recognize statistics like this as an opportunity for reflection and change.

In my daily job I just can't afford time-wise to think about things like this. More than thinking about it, taking the time to instrument, measure, and test a giant program with this level of granularity. This type of stuff needs to be handled by the language, compiler, or hardware.

Consider that taxpayers fund and build airports. Available seats on an airplane are priced using demand based pricing.

Taxpayers provide land and (sometimes) fund rail infranstructure. Most long distance rail uses demand based pricing (the last seat costs more than the first).

Taxpayers also (sometimes) provide/pay for land and the costs to build roads. Until now, we haven't seen demand based pricing (the last slot costs more than the first), but it actually fits well with other modes of taxpayer funded transportation.

This approach also considers the cost and value of a road network in a congested area. This could possibly fund other new transport in the area if it really is such a valuable commodity.
