It's not clear that I need mine either. But whenever I try to get off my medication (Effexor), I just can't: with a month, I am having debilitating anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I have to live with horrible side effects for the rest of my life.

I agree with your description. The devil on my other shoulder tries to argue with me about being knowledgeable about the world so that I can do something about it. Support my causes by protesting, donating etc Instead I get into snark warfare on twitter :-(

I wonder whether HN has heard of "Linear Algebra" by Hoffman and Kunze. I learned from it as an undergraduate and remember it being told that it was a classic. Another more abstract book is by the great Halmos: "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces". Both books will stretch and entertain you.

One question for all the self-learners here (I have immense admiration). Do these courses inform your day to day job in some way? Or is this for personal knowledge (even more impressive)? How do you find the damn time? Need some suggestions. My goals are infinite and my time is so short.

Thank you for the response. Yes - I have more tools in my mental arsenal now (meditation, stoicism). The problem is: when the dosage was lowered, it was not clear whether I was seeing a relapse or it was withdrawal. I am amazed by the sleep deprival note you mentioned (something I was not aware of at all) - thank you for that. Why stop? Because of sexual side effects (I don't want my partner to suffer my lack of drive) and weight gain. I am glad I am happy and stable now - the question is: is this my drug or am I recovered?

I hope someone can help me. I was slowly tapered off Effexor (started at 225mg and then slowly to 125, 75, 25). I was overcome by an existential dread that colored every living moment. I landed up in the hospital - only to resume. Has anyone had experiences like this to share? I want to get rid of this medication again this year but am afraid to start. I am well-balanced and happy at work and life atm.

I have been curious about this as well especially since Michael Pollan's book "How to change your mind" came out. How did your experience go? I am not by any means a recreational drug user so have no idea where I can get DMT or mushrooms.

I am glad that you brought this up. I tend to spend a good chunk of time cleaning up and optimizing my .emacs right before I start coding. Absolutely useless waste of time!

I wonder whether calories in - calories out is too simplistic a picture. Why do people put on antipsychotics gain an ungodly amount of weight? If metabolism slows down sufficiently, it will take more effort to burn those calories you take in (even if one hasn't substantially increased ones intake). This is a complex issue and I wish more scientists studied the link between medications and weight gain.
