It seems to me like the underlying issue was ignoring HTTP semantics and making a state-changing link like a logout link a plain <a> (HTTP GET) and not something like a form submission (HTTP POST).

As one of the volunteers operating the existing Market St. WiFi and the housing project WiFi, I can say that this is definitely being discussed and evaluated, but I don't have a lot of hope for the Department of Technology making anything happen.
They have deeply-rooted relationships with large telcos and utilities that have granted them good deals on easements to lay their existing fiber and copper paths. If the city started offering competing services for money, it would throw those relationships in jeopardy.
It's really too bad, as a lot of the dark fiber resources are already in place to build a decent backbone that could support radial paths out different neighborhoods. However, there's very little technical clue (if you're a competent network engineer in the Bay Area, why would you work for a city? ick.) and political capital/gumption towards making this happen.
The layer 0 - 7 stuff is easy. It's layer 8 and above (money, politics, humans) that make this hard to accomplish.

This is _exactly_ what Aircell does in the US. I'm not sure what spectra they're using, but the bandwidth would likely be quite variable, as planes with non-directional antennas will interact with one another over wide areas. Weather could also play a part, depending on the frequency.
I haven't run across or know of any tutorials on this exact problem, but I think you're right that you'll end up doing a lot of the synchronization yourself.
You might check out PubNub and other messaging services. PubNub is a stackmob partner product that can be added in their marketplace. That would provide for a component to handle transporting messages and state information between your document editors.

BOOTP and DHCP use the same ports and general packet structure, so Wireshark has the dissectors grouped.
I was humored by that Wireshark screenshot. ARPs and DHCP/BOOTP requests from a freshly-booted device are not al that unusual.

In my favorite static analysis toolset (Radare, http://radare.org/), there's a nice feature similar to this. It "zooms" out on a big file by summarizing portions of it into chunks and displaying colored ascii characters in a chart to represent the block.
With the entropy and ASCII printable filters setup, it makes repeating patterns and TEXT sections pretty clear.

There are systems for mapping telephone numbers into DNS, like ENUM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENUM), and e164.arpa. in DNS.
There are a couple of factual errors in this piece that I feel obligated to point out: 1. The root DNS server pool only hosts glue pointing TLDs to other pools of servers that administrate those TLDs. No amount of pressure on ICANN or the root server operators can debilitate a single non-TLD domain name. 2. Not all registrars and/or TLD operators exist in the US. All it would take is doing business with an international registrar that doesn't agree with the rules to circumvent DNS tampering laws. 3. In theory, ICANN already requires registrants to maintain accurate information in WHOIS. Registrants should be receiving annual notices from registrars to remind them of this fact. We can all see how well this is working. :p
The issue with providing "identity" to register a domain is that there's no portable, international way of doing so. What does an "identity" consist of? A name? There's plenty of good discussion on this topic in the nymwars.
However, I do agree with SOPA being a red herring, and it's unfortunate that big. Players are still planning a blackout even though the legislature is already backpedaling on the worst bits of the language. What if next month the DOPA (Decapitating Online Piracy Act) bill comes along and it's much worse. Would big sites be willing to continue shutting down their services for each crazy bill that comes around?

I think startup politics generally reflects the power structure surrounding it; whether that be founders or investors that hold a relatively big stake in an organization, or the society surrounding it. The US is not always the most meritocratic or egalitarian environment, and it seems that those that latch onto or come into some power tend to hold to it very tightly and don't share with those around them.
Equity, unless you're very lucky or diligent, often doesn't equate to much. I think, too often, folks tend to place too much emphasis on equity. The terms and value of which are not often immediately obvious to the recipient and can get diluted over time. Twitter's on what... round G now?
Ultimately, starting a startup is a big uphill slog. At the end of the day, everyone needs to put in some level of herculean effort from time to time if it's going to work.
The trick is figuring out how to effectively value the things that each contributor is best at. If you're working in an organization that primarily values software engineers, it can be hard to get recognition as a visual designer.
In an organization that primarily (and sometimes only) values and recognizes software engineers that make things you can see or touch, it can even be hard to make it as a systems plumber or kernel hacker.
No number is made explicit -- they can't really be demanding more than 40 hours / week for exempt employees in California. You're expected to "find your own work/life balance", but there is strong social pressure to stay in the office nights and weekends.
I would expect to work 70 - 80+ weeks there if you're really into it (and checking in / working at home in the evenings and mornings).
I'm pretty familiar with Jack's situation. Yes, this is indeed true, now. For a time he was splitting one day on / one day off at each company.
Frankly, Jack has very little time outside of his work, but I wouldn't say that he doesn't have a life. His work is his life and they are closely intertwined. This is great, since it means he's quite passionate about both product sets and the quality of his companies' net output really shines, IMO.
The danger of this obsessive behavior though is that it can begin to warp ones perspective on others' work/life balance. Jack works like a dog because he's excited about what he does, so it seems to baffle him when those around him aren't equally excited and committed to their work as well.
In the case of Square, they've been very quick to fire anyone who isn't putting 80+% percent of their life into Square -- often with little warning or reason.

Just a point of interest -- most of the SF BART stations are not "repeaters" per se (except perhaps in the context of a network or higher layer protocol), but are actually full blown computerized radio systems themselves. I suspect most are colocated BTSes (or equivalent) that are fed by leased lines.
I just can't stand this mentality. Avoiding doing something just because there might be a mere possibility of being sued for it is a total copout.

If there is some kind smoking gun of violent intentions, I have yet to see it.
It seems to me that both sides have been escalating and blowing a non-situation (shutting power to leased, shared-carrier facilities) out of proportion. It's one thing to reduce coverage, and an entirely different thing to intentionally jam.
