If I had to commute by car every day in traffic… that would absolutely suck. Hopping on the train always feels better though. I get to see random people, relax, listen to music, not worry about crashing…

I’d like to see this asshole waste 2h every day in public transport and get less work done because of a noisy open-plan office.

3 weeks ago my iPad got dropped in water for half a second, then stopped turning on the next day. I booked it in for ‘repair’ at apple, only to be told “sorry, you don’t have applecare, so a replacement will be ~$1300aud. We don’t actually repair any ipad, and offer no genuine parts for any iPad repair”. This was not an old ipad, mind you, but a 2021 M1!

What else can you do but look at files and code to figure out problems? And why use a monospace font for prose? I agree otherwise though, it can bite you in the arse if you don’t understand the layers of abstraction you’re dealing with. It’s the reason I sort of don’t like browser-based stuff. We already have a full OS stack for doing stuff, why add another on top of it?

Are you able to get proper jump-to-definition for stuff in jars? Say you’ve declared an import from a jar, and you get to that import and run ‘jump-to-definition’ (or whatever it is), are you taken to the source of the import? I’m sure IntelliJ idea does this but I cannot get emacs+jdtls+eglot to do this

They’re complaining about pedestrians not being vigilant. I’m saying drive slower and more carefully, fully expecting that peds will carelessly cross the road, and there will be fewer issues.

The difference is that you’re cocooned in a tonne of steel, hurtling along at speeds which kill pedestrians. The onus is on both parties to be vigilant, but it’s more on you as a driver. As soon as you get over this entitled view, like the road is your own little go-kart track, it’s so much easier to drive safely. I used to hold the same view until I started walking regularly and could understand how much the game is tipped towards cars. Their environment is unescapable and every time you interact with a road as a ped. there’s a huge chance you might die. There’s nearly no chance you’ll die by hitting a pedestrian as you drive. Just drive slower and pay more attention. It’s just not that bloody hard at all.

I discovered a strange third place last night: a Counter Strike Source server in my country. It had about ten different people talking over voice chat. They were all very frank and cheerful, and it seemed like they congregate there each night. I’m going to start joining regularly.

But how is input lag? That’s a crucial factor for counter strike.

This is stupid. There’s been an explosion in the number of gaming-capable Macs since the M-series chips came out. It’s remained largely untapped. The reason “there aren’t enough players” is because there aren’t enough people doing games for Mac! It used to be an issue of hardware and OS support, but it has now become an issue of (frankly) lazy/biased/unimaginative developers.

I think it's the nature of being a labourer, really. Your body is the machine, energy has to move through it by way of forces. Our spines are just not that great at holding up under the forces. Sorry to hear about your wife's situation, too. If she has an office job a nice chair goes such a long way. I got a HM Embody and can say that it improved my ability to work, since there's a lot less pain now.

Working as a labourer wrecked my back. I live with the pain every second of my life now. If they want more people to do this, they should pay them more. There is no such thing as a labour shortage - EVER. This is a stupid term. There is a pay shortage instead.

As someone in the geocomputation space, the road and intersection detail in the map tiles is super impressive. I wonder how they did it. They’ve got seemingly perfect vector-graphics representation of all road features: lines, islands, medians, slip lanes… very impressive.

I exclusively use Apple Maps, but the location sharing feature is better in Waze. Waze also generally has more people reporting police locations.

What about parents in China?

They’ve actually screwed themselves. The 10% or so of people (a guess) who are outraged and have left reddit or locked their communities seem likely to be the small percentage of users who post the most (keeping the site alive for the majority of comparative ‘lurkers’). They’ve pissed off the most devoted people, and the less devoted will just follow the ‘outliers’ to new places.

This guy is too much of a showman for me to trust him and take him seriously. It’s all coloured by the years of conniving he’s done as a criminal defence lawyer. He may have a point but I’d rather read about it.
