That's pretty funny. I wonder how it came to that conclusion? Seems like a stretch that someone would have discussed that technique on a reddit thread it was trained on, but definitely not impossible.

I asked Claude if it was sentient/aware once after an oddly human interaction, and it said, "There's nothing it's like to be me", basically responding in the negative. And when pushed about what it meant it said it was referencing this paper but twisting the title a bit. If anything this only made me less convinced it's not.

I know most people here will dismiss it, and I too lean toward it not being sentient, but I also think if it ever does become sentient it's going to be really hard to prove.

I'm being slightly snarky, but good luck watching a TV if you're doing an intense/valuable sauna session.

When I'm in my dry sauna and really pushing myself with the heat and steam off the hot rocks, I basically have to mediate to stay in beyond 15 minutes because every part of my mind starts telling me to get out and cool down.

I'm sure it was also for his own sake/sanity. He took two ~9-month sabbaticals toward the last half, which was not the norm for cartoonists at the time.

I was going to comment something similar. I think I'm about the same age as the commenter grew up reading C&H, and also had a disaffected attitude. I don't think it was Calvin that made me that way, but the broader media at the time. Heck, most kids at my school did not read it but the general way to be cool was to be aloof.

I think it was a hangover from Gen-X and the 80's. Ferris Bueller was pretty aloof and angst'd to the gills wasn't he?

Aren't they attempting to also display current time though? Your share is a clock starting at midnight/noon. Kimi K2 seems to be the best on each refresh.

I don't think this is the argument you want it to be, unless you're acknowledging the power of the Chinese government and their ability to suppress and destroy evidence. Even so there is photo evidence of dead civilians in the square. The best estimates we have are 200-10,000 deaths, using data from Beijing hospitals that survived.

AskHistorians is legitimately a great resource, with sources provided and very strict moderation: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/pu1ucr/tiana...

Yeah I just ordered one. The effectiveness of this HN post plus this parent comment has me convinced they're in cahoots.

Fixing problems is not as simple as giving someone money

I've heard the exact opposite. Usually it's the strings attached that end up being perfect for the corrupt to grab onto and manipulate.

It sounds like you're conflating legal arguments with moral ones. You're saying animals lack rights so it's morally okay to enslave/make use of them?

I'd argue it's much baser than that. Animals have feelings and often feel very bad when kept in enslaved conditions. Since humans can understand the pain they inflict on enslaved animals, then it's wrong of us to continue enslaving them when we have alternatives that are just as healthy for us, if not more healthy.

I would also say your assumption that pigs do not comprehend their actions and cannot choose between alternatives is false.

Peter Giunta, who said "I love Hitler" and "Everyone that votes no is going to the gas chamber", is 31 years old. The others in the group are in their 20s..

I guess the interesting thing is they built and maintained a nest which looked mostly like a colony. The colony's food source being the fresh falling ants you mentioned.

"In total darkness, they have constructed an earthen mound, which they have maintained all-year-round by moulding it and keeping the nest entrances open," researchers wrote in a study in 2016, noting these ants are "a far cry from a fully functional colony".

From the Snopes:

Some viewers took the video a little too literally, however, and were surprised at Koko's pithy and timely exhortation to heed the perils of global warming. But nothing about the video indicates that Koko can actually entertain, much less communicate to humans, thoughts about environmentalism.

Personally I never took it literally. I saw the video and knew right away it was just a marketing stunt, but that didn't mean I suddenly thought research into ape intelligence and language should stop. I do wish they had made it more clear that it was just a stunt because I'm sure people like you felt mislead.

I am still fascinated with Koko and the brains of great apes! Also fascinating that they've never asked a question but at least one grey parrot has. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_(parrot)#cite_note-jordan...

I cook over easy eggs a few times a week in my cast iron. Works great.

I've also done it in stainless steel and while it does work there's a bit more of a learning curve imo. Have to heat the pan first then add the oil at just the right heat (when a drop of water glides around but doesn't evaporate too fast).

All in all I'm glad I learned how to use and care for cast iron.

Honestly sounds like you're just disconnected from the culture. There are plenty of creative novels coming out these days. For a specific example check out Adrian Tchaikovsky's work.

Also you may want to subscribe to a short story publication like Clarkesworld. You'll have a drip feed of aspiring creative writers and can follow the ones you find especially good for when their forthcoming novels come out.

One that especially blew me away from Clarkesworld recently was Axiom of Dreams by Arula Ratnakar.

I'm with you here. I think talking about both is important but its a false dichotomy.

I would classify "psychologically addictive" as something that makes a little voice in my head go "do that thing again" and is mainly driven by the speed at which an action(drug or not) receives a physiological response in my body. If I take a hit of a weed vape I feel it so fast that my psychological addiction gets triggered more easily. Whereas when I eat a weed edible the response takes so long that the little voice in my head doesn't say, "eat another one". Unless I eat one every day then that little voice becomes stronger over time.

I can do either of those things one time and only experience the acute withdrawal.

I would classify "physical addiction" as a habit where cessation causes a lengthy (not acute) withdrawal period, caused by some type of brain changes like receptor degrowth because of over-agonization or whatever. I think we qualify ones that have worse withdrawal as more physically addictive. As some have already pointed out, alcohol withdrawal can make you dead and opiate withdrawal can make you wish you were, so we consider these very physically addictive. THC withdrawals exist, but they are so minor when compared to death or opiate-withdrawal hell that we consider it not very physically addictive.

An extreme example: Someone could spike my coffee with opiates every day for a year without me knowing, slowly increasing the dose so I'm not too messed up. I would be physically addicted but have no psychological addiction.

I believe this is existentialism, not nihilism. They both start from the premise that the universe is inherently meaningless, but in existentialism you can create meaning while in nihilism you cannot.

I just watched episode 4 of Atlanta last night and Donald Glover's character had a really good monologue about being poor after finding out his friend had helped him turn 190$ into 2000$ but that it wouldn't be available right away:

Earn Marks: Poor people don't have time for investments, because poor people are too busy trying not to be poor. Okay? I need to eat today, not in September.

People who start at 9 don't enjoy their morning any more than I do.

I am a morning person which means I really treasure my morning coffee and jazz music and reading time. I wake up at 7am and enjoy two sweet hours of a cold, dreamy morning before starting work fresh at 9am.

I am a night person which means I really treasure my nightly herbal tea and hip hop music and comic book time. I take a hot shower at 10pm before wandering into bed sleepy at 10:45pm.

None of this is rigid but I just feel like you are making super subjective arguments about a person's choice in time to work and sleep and live their life.

I love doing peloton classes via the screen thingy a la black mirror. I had access to one at my old apartment complex and did it 2-3 times a week for about a year. If I wasn't still moving around I'd invest in one for sure.

I always chose the classes done by this one enigmatic instructor, but would branch out to others sometimes.

You don't just get hooked on the exercise, you get hooked on the instructor and the social experience. I can definitely see this happening with mirror and lululemon. Sign me up.

If you load the site again it should be using tls. I opted to separate concerns and threw Cloudflare(free tier) in front of it. You might be wondering, well okay its encrypted between my browser and Cloudflare but what about the connection between the Cloudflare proxy server and s3? To solve that I used the s3 api endpoint instead of the website endpoint which supports tls. I turned Cloudflare's tls setting to full which uses tls between proxy and origin but allows for a self-signed cert from the origin. So its encrypted from browser to proxy to s3 api. As long as no one poisons the s3 api dns we should be good.

Hey sigmaprimus I'd love to hear more about your transition from "City Boy" to farmer! I'm thinking of taking the leap in a few years after saving "enough" capital. I can put my contact info in my bio if you have time to private message.
