these are things I might consider if I was in your situation: 1) build something that you think will force you to learn whatever data structures and algorithms you want to learn. Two benefits; learning and having something to show for it 2) ask someone to do mock interviews with you to practice 3) take the coursera ML course - fascinating, useful, marketable skill and hard to do unless you have a couple of months free to dedicate 4) network. Coffee with people IRL regularly

I've lived in Tokyo and I am the author of this article. I have to say that the scale is completely incomparable here. Not only this, there are over 100 cities in China with a population of over 1m. There are 9 in the USA.

Obviously I can't verify, but we did see a stockroom full of parts and working printers nearly ready to ship. It's $200, PLA-only with an acrylic stage. They will have a more expensive option with a metal base and support for ABS.

Considering that a Raspberry Pi's processor is the same/similar to an original iPhone (v1)'s processor, repurposing an old iPhone has a lot of advantages over shelling out $35 for a Pi.

Romo (http://romotive.com/meet-romo) is a cool example of repurposing old smartphones (unfortunately only works with iPhone 4 and above, but conceptually interesting)

Amen. We're planning a follow-up post about that issue. It's a real one for sure. If you can get a $40 Android tablet today, they'll be handed out for free within 5 years. Nobody is talking about the waste issue.

Well said and 100% agree. I pressed them on that a few times and never got a good answer as to why they think anonymity is a good design choice. Many others I have spoken to who've used mturk significantly have come to the same conclusion you did.

Customer Service could have been a bullet point on it's own. I happen to think of it as a part of everything, or rather: that everything is part of customer service, and certainly encompassed within "build a beautiful, elegant customer experience." Agreed: mishaps happen, and how a customer handles them is part of the core customer experience. Delighted customers become your extended marketing team by becoming passionate advocates of your service.

Things like Arduino and 3D-printing are making it easier to prototype actual devices, and imho the effect of these is disruptive as it greatly increases the number of people who can develop ideas and it greatly increases the ability to iterate. Net-net is more innovation. So even if the rest is still hard (design for manufacturing and manufacturing at scale) there's still a disruption going on relative to the way things were a few years ago. Remember that 15 or 16 years ago, if you wanted to sell something online, you needed to buy servers, configure software, scan film and upload image files, etc. It's gotten easier and so will hardware manufacturing, because the demand is there.

Good idea...and is one of the biggest challenges in this space. It's great that things like Arduino have made it easier to build something physical and connected, but it does not translate to something that can be manufactured at scale, nor does redoing a design for scale manufacture suffice (also need to get the commit of a manufacturer that can and will work with you). Then you have supply chain, quality control, time, inventory...lots of challenges. Still, all that stuff is getting easier too. Would be a great follow-up post sometime.

Great post. Just a thought to add to the reasons: at least some investment firms approach markets proactively and will work hard to identify emerging market opportunities and seek out the early innovators and strong teams -- especially in areas where there are first mover advantages. Their strategy is to identify the strongest team and earliest leader in the space and fund it to help it move fast. By definition if a company wasn't on their radar months ago, it is behind the curve.

Wow, thought-provoking post! I had three reactions to this.

1) Software is in it's early days (in the grand scheme of things.) Though things may seem "hand-made" now, it won't always be the case. In fact I'd say OO, design patterns, frameworks, cloud technologies and more are the early equivalents of regulations, well-accepted standards, etc.

2) What other profession is as egalitarian? What other profession has as much upside? Entire industries can be changed by a few smart people. That kind of opportunity makes the "hassle" worth it.

3) The hassle of having stakeholders/customers constantly wanting things faster and cheaper can easily be mitigated by being picky about what company your work, for, it's business model and it's culture. Not all software companies face that issue.

Consult a lawyer. State laws vary. Generally, the USA is a very worker-friendly place. Employers can't own what you do on your own time, and provided it is not competitive, you are likely okay. Granted with a company of Google's scope that may be hard.
