I'm not a copyright lawyer, but it seems pretty clear to me you can't wash a license using an LLM.

Anything in the result written by a human can be, and if it was all emitted by the LLM then that portion originally written by a human carries its own copyright.

As a work of an LLM, the entirety presumably can not be copyright, at all. Portions written by humans presumably carry their original copyright.

While the intent is not to call for competing proposals, we believe that now is a good time to discuss and propose alternative proposals as well.

If I were a contributor I would read such language as saying "we have no respect for you or your intelligence, so we'll just straight up gaslight you and expect you to accept it."

The dictum can't be read literally - it has to be read like the manipulative, narcissist-speak that it is. And what it's telling you is - get out.

Well, there is a long tradition of "testing" developer candidates by asking them to exhibit skills in tasks that they never, ever, do in their work. Like whiteboard coding.

It doesn't have a great success record.

I personally would rather they exhibited expert skills in using tools, and expressing their design insight as a part of that skillset.

It's not uncommon for older aerial photos to be single-pixel lines that the film is moved past. The motion of the film is correlated with the motion across the ground, so you can reconstruct a 2nd axis from the exposure.

There's no shutter speed, it's continuous.

I don't know, I go back and forth a bit. The thing that makes me skeptical is this: where is the training data that contains the experiences and thought processes that senior developers, architects, and engineering managers go through to gain the insight they hold?

I don't think your conclusion of "hitting the wall on intelligence" is warranted.

It makes more sense to believe that scaling has hit the wall on available text data to train on, and that to continue scaling, along with whatever emergent properties arise they need much more data than exists as text.

There are orders of magnitude more data as video, audio, and images and this is what they intend to use to continue scaling.

Two reasons it matters:

1) Discoverability

2) "System structure mirrors organization". I.E., it's an indicator of a fragmented and disorganized structure that's not likely to produce cohesive product results.

As someone who's spouse is currently in their 3rd year of rehabilitation after TMJ (tempo-mandibular joint) reconstruction, let me warn you against any kind of chewing activity that involves either high direct pressures (ice, hard things that "crack", anything that resists biting down very much), or strong lateral forces (bagels, pizza crust).

We're about $60K in to her treatment. She's had the meniscus of the joints on both sides of her jaw surgically repaired and now is undergoing orthodontia to permit her jaw to safely re-align.

This after a year of excruciating pain (the TMJ was bone to bone contact), and a year of painful muscular rehab. Unless you are a maxillofacial surgeon or perhaps a particular specialty of orthodontia you are probably unaware of just how many muscles in the head have to re-learn how to work after TMJ problems.

I was like that for several decades but after I retired I got better.

I'm fairly certain that, at least in my case, it was a form of hypervigilance and based in anxiety. I'm less anxious these days and hope to live longer as a result.

Although I do still have a better-than-average ability to know when to check what's in the oven for doneness. This "feels" much different, though - I'm completely unaware of the passage of time until something just says to me "that stuff should be about done now."

Python 3 is a hugely successful language and implementation, and almost no one regrets that it exists aside from a few noisy holdouts, and people who never liked any Python anywhere at any time.

RTO is actually energy positive from a heating/cooling point of view (i.e., excluding transportation). People set their home HVAC to "away" to reduce use, and the central HVAC systems found in commercial buildings are far more efficient than home systems.

Your local fire department will want to very closely inspect your explosive materials handling and safety procedures. Think about what big banks of lead-acid batteries have to do, and google the pictures of battery rooms with their roof blown to bits.

Seasonal energy storage is the last thing that needs to be addressed in the storage hierarchy. There are very high-value targets starting on very low time frames.

Now you are conflating a GMD with an EMP, which isn't anything like accurate.

A GMD is a long-duration event that creates movement in the Earth's magnetic field, which induces low-frequency ground currents (literally: current flows in the earth) in the surface of Earth.

An EMP is a very short duration, high-frequency pulse of energy in a local or regional electric field. The effects are completely different, the objects that are affected are completely different, they are completely different cases to consider.

Your anecdote also conflates wind storm damage, which affects local distribution systems, with (hypothetical) GMD damage, which affects long-distance transmission systems. With wind lines, poles, and the occasional transformer, is damaged and there is a lot of labor-intensive repair. With GMD, a very small number of high-capacity transformers are potentially affected. Different deal completely.

So talking about cars that don't start, etc is just nonsense when talking about GMDs.

I don't see any way to continue this dialogue given that we aren't even talking about the same thing.

Saying that we could make transformers 100 years ago is not the same as saying we would use 100 year old transformer tech. It simply points out that there is a scale of technology, and we can use whatever point is appropriate. Manufacturers know quite well which requirements are longevity- and cost- related, and which are must-have functionality.

As to the other objections, do we really think that manufacturing and transport would not be given top priority? The US military is the largest, most capable logistics operation on the planet. They specialize in black-start operations. They can make sure manufacturers get materials, and products get delivered.

In any case the idea of a transformer massacre by GMD is a fading one because the cost-effective way to address the issue, by monitoring and mitigating the effects, are under way and improving over time.

There are some misunderstandings in the above.

1) AGPS is not local positioning. It is a "speed-up" assist from cellular networks to provide the Almanac (e.g., satellite orbit info) quicker than a GPS receiver can get it from the satellites. All AGPS receivers use the actual GPS satellite signals to calculate the receiver's position. No sats, no position.

2) RTK does not provide a local positioning system. RTK allows a base station receiver, which is in a stable/not-moving site, to observe GPS position calculations over a long period of time and 'averages' the positions to arrive at a highly precise position for itself. It then monitors the real-time positions it calculates and broadcasts a list of error corrections to be applied to the satellite signals to reduce the real-time error, which is constantly changing. Again, no sats, no pos.

The transformer lead time issue is to some extent FUD. The lead times are large because there is enough financial incentive in having transformers last for 40 years that they on the extreme end of the spectrum of possible engineering and manufacturing (of transformers).

If there were a national/international massacre of transformers (also, mostly FUD*) there would be an almost overnight response of making dead-simple, dead-easily made transformers and grids would begin being resupplied within weeks. Remember, we could mass manufacture transformers over a 100 years ago.

Of course such a long outage may well be a civilizational disaster, but it wouldn't be years of lead time for replacement.

* Transmission providers have begun monitoring transformers for DC flows on the neutral conductor, which is what damages them in a GMD condition. Once detected, they can drop affected transformers (causing an outage), and even dispatch line workers to physically disconnect if need be.
