I think history tends to be written by the winners when it comes to entrepreneurship. It's a lot harder- and a lot more luck involved- than many would admit.

I'm 29 right now, and that feels about right for my permanent age. I always felt a little out of place with the pace of life when I was younger, I like having stable relationships and a reasonable balance between career and social life. I like being comfortable with money and being able to travel and do what I want. At the same time, I'm not anxious to have a family and sacrifice so much of my time.

Part of it is that, but part of it is our parents giving us incomplete advice. The message is always, "go to college and everything will work itself out" and their kids get the impression that choosing a major is sort of a personal decision that doesn't have any tremendous impact.

A lot of people seem very smug about ridiculing liberal arts majors for their life decisions. Please realize that most of us working in software are also lucky enough to be paid well and love what we do, we followed our hearts AND our heads. Imagine a world where there were no software jobs and you needed a PhD in french poetry to get a real job?

I think that advisors at private 4-year schools should have a responsibility to strongly advise against a poor choice of major compared against a bad student loan situation.

Sorry if I missed something from the page but how do we know this really works?

In my experience once most middle eastern/arab people are "integrated", people see their appearance as vaguely mediterranean and don't really think twice about it.

Like Louis CK said in a stand-up routine- "I'm not saying white people are better, but being white is clearly better." i.e., you're not likely to ever have an opportunity denied to you in life due to your skin color, or gender.

I'm not blaming them, racism is always unfair to the recipient but on projects I've worked on Indians have done absolutely nothing to combat it. By that I mean, they hang out together, they go to lunch together, they basically avoid any unnecessary communication with non-Indians. I ask them to go to lunch and I get a reaction like "um, we kinda go to lunch together." I understand that there are a lot of cultural barriers there, but people are naturally very social and fair or not, they aren't going to have as much trust and faith in people that they don't have a social relationship with.

Exactly, it's an issue of prejudice more than racism- I would bet that a white american with a thick southern accent would probably face more of an uphill battle than any of the above.

Has anyone here ever had their name on a press release for a product launch? Dude gets a 8-figure salary and unlimited autonomy without the risk and management overhead of starting his own firm. There are tradeoffs in life.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he was doing something over there.

I see what you're getting at but in this case the author is clearly taking a very humble approach.

The author's logic isn't "Steve Jobs took LSD, you should too", it's "Steve Jobs took LSD and credits it as a crucially important intellectual experience in his life, so maybe you should too." I'm pretty sure Jobs didn't say the same thing about being adopted.

When I read articles like this, my first impulse is to pour money into equities.

Warren Buffett made a comment to the effect of, even though he's intelligent and worked hard for his money, he still has to consider it luck that he happened to be born in the right circumstances because if he were born in a primitive hunter/gatherer society, he would be at the bottom no matter how smart he was because of his lack of physical strength. We all owe our success and the ability of be successful on the merits of our intelligence and hard work alone to the current structure of society to some extent.

Given those numbers, you'd have a statistical expectation of one life saved for every 150 hours spent. Say $100/hr for salaries+bennies for two parametics, 15K per life saved. I think it's worth it.

The problem is that people go too far with the bashing- People tend to just sneer at anything PHP-related, and don't acknowledge that great work is being done every day in PHP. An app written in PHP by a 8/10 programmer is going to be better than an app written in (sexy other language) by a 7/10 programmer.

All the quasi-dating stuff in facebook profiles is kind of awkward anyway, they should probably just get rid of it. It's mostly good for a laugh when a facebook noob signs up and fills it out like an online dating profile. I know people use Facebook to meet people, but they usually do so in a more discrete way since you usually communicate with friends and family on the same channel.

Seems odd to call him a "black hat hacker" just for being at the conference. He could very well just attend all of the security-related conferences. The headline implies to me that he plans to use this exploit nefariously.

Ditto on interland (web.com). They basically hold your domain hostage, and force you to jump through so many phone customer support hoops so that most customers will just give up.

However, you -did- get in my way. For a long time. 3mph? Cripes, do you know how long it takes to move a rig around another rig at 3mph more while being safe?

By my calculations, about a minute and a half at the absolute most. So if you were intending to pass both trucks at 80 mph, and assuming the passing truck moves back into the right lane when safely able to, this fiasco adds approximately 10-15 seconds to your commute. Oh the horror.
