Sorry not being clear enough. Yes I was kind of asking why they didnt try simpler options. When you look at their paper on Haystack you see that it's essentially a constant local database.

If you're familiar with thumbnail display you know Facebook has Haystack for efficient image serving. It goes very low end. Sparkey or CDB or BAM (mentioned in this post) could be much less complex and can do similar work. Why did they go Haystack route I dont get it.

can you please expand on this? everybody says C-CORP for a startup for flexibility, investor trust and so on. OTOH, C-CORPs are costlier and more complex. but you're an INC and "real" startups as DBAs! if you make blog post on this that would be great.

Email nor anything related to core email protocols do not need to be fixed or redesigned. It's doing what it was supposed to be used for and still doing it very well. Over the years desktop and web mail people have added too much and its 70s design idea of anyone can send mail to any other's inbox (btw, creative idea at the time worked till 2000s) have cooperatively decreased its usage.

We still need this universal and mature protocol but we should do a different thing for communication. period.

Hard as in writing code in three different languages. Apart from that I think tech community giving too much credit for Apple and especially Google. They could have fixed this native vs html5-js-css thing two versions ago.

Try Haxe 14 years ago

I've searched a little while and found that it has no support for camera (or sensors) in mobile devices. It looks like HAXE/NME is heavily geared towards game development.

Actually they don't have much choices on dropping some specific email features to make UI better. Anyways I think it's just like MS Metro. One cannot say OMG this is cool as we say with Apple properties but people continue to use those (inferior) UIs.

I'm the co-founder of Tusulog ask me anything.

bdfh42: you know it's just like that always. Chicken-and-Egg. Maybe you can open another account to test or add me as friend http://tusulog.com/people/mehmet we can exchange a few.

kaolinite: honestly you should have a few friends over there to really decide you want or not. A reason maybe as a user you've absolute control of your inbox.

Tusulog complements email and more but we honestly don't think email can replaced completely. It's a simple product that sends and receives messages between people. What it does:

First it turns the basic idea of email upside down that's anybody can send mail to anybody's inbox. With Tusulog messages from people you don't know goes to Public Pipe and also you can disable it altogether. BTW, your friends can send to your inbox directly.

Second with email you apply the filter after getting the message. With Tusulog you apply the filter (pipe) before. PG, taking your example literally: You create a TODO Pipe with public_key THEPUBLICKEYOFPGSTODOPIPE. You give this public_key to people you want. They can send message to that pipe in other words they can put a task into your ToDo list. They can do it using Tusulog UI or Tusulog API.

edit: added linebreaks

This is just the beginning guys! Big web properties are becoming more like a TV Network. They interrupt you with an ad because they think that if their name is not some power of 10 then they have to use this TV-like experience. Maybe they're right but if this "platformization" thing catches on then you will _not_ have option to block them out!

I don't know the solution but I'm (we're) trying with our startup.

Interesting analysis. I think now Facebook has become when-AOL-bought-Time-Warner-big. As a new social network startup founder I'm happy about what Facebook released. We've launched before Google+ and then we saw G+ has bombarded with features and now FB. They both are becoming much more confusing. Everything for everybody.

Quora is hardly going mainstream because mainstream cannot ask the questions that Quora elite would answer. Not that they don't have the ability but they don't care! If it does ever it'll be called Yahoo Answers.

It's simple to use. Uncluttered. Makes your communication with your friends easier.

We use the term "easier than" because only you can decide if it is better. I haven't used dreamwidth so no comment. Twitter and Facebook are gigantic successfull companies doing great work. For the "communication with your friends"-wise our product is easier to use.

Your ROI could be easier and more direct communication with your friends. On Tusulog you cannot broadcast to all your friends at once, only to the specific group you choose. So you don't worry about "if I post this my mom/boss/ex may see too!". This may not be a problem for power users but most people don't know how to tackle those complex privacy settings.

Thanks for all the feedback. These will help us greatly. Appreciated.

First of all, we don't say it's the most genius site ever or the next Facebook. All we say is that our product makes socializing with your friends easier.

There are very few things on our to-do list before going to work on improving the home page and so. After that there will be a lot more explanation of what it is and what it does. Last but not least I hope you all will be using our product!

Thanks. Our site, as all SNs, are useful only if your friends are there. Classic chicken/egg situation.

If you join and have a few friends over there believe me you'll say "I wish all my friends were here then everything become much easier".

People feel sick because it add and adds and adds and become too much to handle. UI become bloated. And after some time you're done.

What you described as future SNs are actually more history Usenet, IRC, Well, Prodigy, AOL, Geocities and so on. Yes communities will always be there but SNs are solving a different problem. SNs are more about socializing with your friends than talking what's happening with Rails project lately.

I agree that an incumbent is very hard to be beaten head-on. Examples: Google on search. Microsoft on OS or Office.

Over time monopolistic players start to be everything for everybody. This may be just fine but in addition to that they promote bloat at the expense of their main product's usability. That's when new players emerge.

First wave of SNs were aimed at dating as the lure (Friendster). Second wave of SNs were/are aimed at social sharing of everything and anything with everybody and anybody (FB). Third wave of SNs are aimed/will be aimed at "real" social sharing of everything and anything with only people you choose (Tusulog.com, our start-up).

We're focused on one main thought: you don't, by default, socialize with all your friends plus "acquaintances" at once. Just impossible. When you're with your family you socialize in the context of family. You don't talk about the crazy party last Saturday with your family. This is the idea we focus on.

People return to FB because of inertia basically, not necessarily because they need to. That's why they start to whine and mainstream media have been reflecting this situation.

We've been developing a web app (http://tusulog.com) to address this "need" in addition to others. Our app allows your public timeline (like Twitter) and groups concept. You can have public, anon and private groups. Private groups are just like FB groups. Even if FB Groups seem to be more than sufficient, we think FB pages have become very cluttered. Furthermore, they couldn't have nailed it (I don't know why): 50m groups for 700m users is not much and humans communicate mostly by group/network basis. In other words, you don't speak to family the same you speak to school friends.

We haven't done any PR/promotion work and I want to ask your comments about how should we compete against the Goliaths?

i didn't get what you mean by networked data store. afaik almost all of kv stores are similar wrt "network".

i checked http://redis.io/topics/benchmarks and saw that kivaloo performs better within given constraints like value limit at 255 bytes. your benchmark page makes numbers worse because of that 128 mb option.
