Yes you need backups and no RAID is not a backup. That would also cover the falling of the table scenario.

Backups can be easily done via USB, remote encrypted offsites or using a second device for synching and cold standby.

You can always call us during the warranty period - from our experience this rarely happens. Yes we do sell maintenance packages outside the warranty terms. We dispatch technicians and with those maintenance packages you don't need to pay for that.

We use ZFS RAID 5 and while it's a great way to make sure that you can recover from 1/4 drive failures, 2/4 drive losses will be bad.

And yes you're right on the full disk encryption - and this is something we'll be shipping in one of our upcoming releases which happen on a monthly basis.

You should try our trial (just hit the button) - it's basically the same system that runs on the boxes and once you decide to buy one we can just provide it setup with everything you did online.

The device comes with different raid levels - preconfigured and on-site support if anything happens.

Exactly, I believe there's a clear cycle going on (mainframes - pc - clouds - personal clouds).

Fueled by:

- moores law (massive compute power and storage at cheap prices) - bandwidths growing - new tools and devices that create constant streams of data (smartphones, collaborative & filesharing tools etc.) - commoditization of our most-used online tools (see dropbox) - a desire to have one integrated point of access/control

and a raising awareness of how important it is to own/control our data (caused in part by constant news coming out on hacks, data breaches and how basically data companies are the new oil companies)

I believe the American Taxpayer will have to pay for this either way, the choice is between effectively destroying the lives of those that default or giving them a fighting chance.

I'd like to disagree with you and I believe that a default rate of > 13% (and rising sharply - http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/first-official-three-y...) supports my statement.

IMO they should default just like typical loans. These student loans wreak havoc with the lives of those that cannot pay them back - best example are doctors that are not allowed to practice anymore because of their student loan delinquencies.

True, but that is not the problem - the problem is that college and education costs have risen almost exponentially. This problem will certainly not be solved by pumping massive amounts of bad loans into the bank accounts of already overpaid colleges.

I agree that bailouts are not the answer.

The answer is to let these loans default. That's how the lending system should work. No bailouts, but simple defaults.

You as a lender are responsible for factoring in the probability of a default. If you haven't - sucks to be you. Same goes for government loans, e.g. you create an institutionalized Banking system (like the Federal Direct Student loans).

And if you survive the coming mass default (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-02-28/delinquencies-stude...) - without gov. bailouts - you'll have learned a valuable lesson on lending: Don't give out ridiculous loans on ridiculous terms to people who can't afford them. And rest assured that the education system will find a way to adapt - probably by making education a lot cheaper again.

thanks! :D I'm working on subtitles for our video... we're currently building a small - let's say - appliance that provides small companies with a wireless infrastructure, NAS capabilities and a collaborative social network. why? I think the future will be a much nicer place when everyone of us own a small piece of social infrastructure. specially if you link up all those small pieces. :)

actually it was on thursday, but the past days were crazy...

and I'm not sure this will happen, computational power is becoming so cheap I don't think it would make any sense to offload it to google

"streaming, distributed parallel calculations" certainly agree on these ones, maybe the code just change from app logic to these things...
