Not collecting even minimal fares means other parts of the system won’t be funded. Cut the price in half or more. But it has value. It does not need to make a profit.

I've been in a couple "lights out" datacenters and there always seem to be electrical/cooling/backups engineers in and around running regular checks. Which is great! Also services for cleaning public spaces.

Servers run until vendor contracts get terminated.

But actual lights? In shared office bldgs it actually depends on the renter's requests to the cleaning service. I've worked many places where the crew would turn the light on/off when entering/leaving (though would be shocked seeing me working in the dark); but I've worked a place or two where they requested all lights stay on all night, because "when mgmt shows up early in the morning they can't find the light switches next to the door" (made up quote but you get it)

You don’t need to do all of that up front. Many times I use a meeting invite to suggest a time, allowing for the other party to adjust the timing, especially with someone you’re in contact with but wish to sync up. Once the time is set I’ll drop links in place. I like calendar but I find it clunky sometimes for similar reasons.

I'm 49 also, and I still write C and Python. I also have a lot of experience of scaling things operationally, so we have many things to provide. I love learning the new things, if they help me do my job better - like git (HATE svn. HATE). I quickly can spot the fads and will look at them and wait (scala, erlang) for the right place to use them.
