This is overall a good move if we want a chance to greatly slow the spread. However it needs to be coordinated with the rest of the country if we want to minimize the total downtime. Shutting down Washington now and having to wait weeks for Idaho to follow (where there are no reported cases) is just going to force Washington to extend theirs as long as it takes for the last state to shut down.

One argument I never see in UBI discussions is that some people are just bad with money. If you give more money to someone who doesn't budget, save, live within their means, etc, it won't help. There are people who spend beyond their means and then get payday loans. So while it would help some people who would spend wisely, many would not.

You would have payday loans 2.0 where people would borrow against future UBI payments, spend on non necessities, and then be in an probably worse situation compared to the people still receiving UBI.

The Uber Dilemma 9 years ago

Maybe Benchmark is hoping for a situation like Zenefit's. Ousted the CEO and accused him of fraud. Then they effectively increased their investor and employee ownership stakes at the former CEO's expense.

Contents of the PoC are a ".zip" file that is actually plain-text (the engine ignores extension/mime types) and contains just this line of JS and 90kb of nonsense JS for entropy.

(new Error()).toString.call({message: 0x41414141 >> 1})

It's hard to imagine MS doesn't receive tons of watson crash reports of MsMpEng from trying to run bits of random JS. If they haven't looked at them, they probably should start now.

Isolation: It's hard not being around others from a social perspective. When you have no coworkers to vent to, celebrate with, or collaborate with, you get higher highs and lower lows since everything is internal.

Accountability: You're the boss and the employee, it can be really difficult to force your 'boss' self to do things your 'employee' self doesn't want to do (eg support, sales, refactoring, etc)

Sales: This has already been mentioned, but the hardest part for me is that you need to be pretty passionate about it to be successful.

Problem Solving: Sometimes you just cant "get" something, and talking through the problem aloud to someone can give you new ideas/solutions you hadn't even considered. You don't know what you don't know.

I wonder how this can be viable. The closing and transaction fees (agent/title/escrow/closing/excise) make it tough for many home-flippers to overcome and make a profit if no major renovations are done. 2-5% for closing costs on the purchase and sale, as well as agent fees when selling mean they have to gross at least 7-13% on every house just to break even.

Never used RethinkDB, but this is the first time I've seen an announcement this written as "we are shutting down, the team is moving to Stripe" rather than "We've been acquired by Stripe! Nothing will change except our product will stop working in 30 days"

Much respect for the no-BS announcement.

I guess another way to put it is "I don't know what the truth is" is somewhat inconsistent with "there's no harm in cutting back on".

For instance, if someone said "drinking water decreases your sodium levels", and you said "there's no harm in cutting back on water", you'd be making a mistake.

I also think the full verdict is still out on what "heart healthy" means.

In your specific case, it could be family/genetic disposition to high blood pressure/cholesterol, environmental factors, or diet.

If it is diet, and you were eating more than the average person's amount of red meat, fried foods, and saturated fat, perhaps it will help you to cut back on those things, but you would need to do that for a while and keep everything else constant and see if things improved. If you weren't eating "lots" of those things to begin with, it's not clear reducing them further would make a difference.

I think this is why nutrition is so hard, it's almost impossible to really control all the variables and our objective measurements are lacking. For instance, "high cholesterol" doesn't tell you anything about the size of the cholesterol. High blood pressure may just run in your family. It's really hard to determine the effects of our diet.

Yea, same thing is true of commercial milk. Apparently they skim off all the fat and just add it back in to make 1%/2% etc. Who knows, they may even do it for whole milk so that the percentage (and taste/texture) are consistent cross batches.

Not inherently a bad thing I suppose, but feels wrong because it's such an industrial process.

I don't get why fried foods are still demonized. If you use, say coconut oil or avocado oil and stay under the smoke points (so the oils dont break down), what's the problem?

Maybe there's an assumption that this means commercially prepared fried foods, which may use soybean oils that aren't cleaned/changed regularly?

I can't remember which paper I read it in, but it said the amount of oxidation that happens normally as your body functions significantly dwarfs the amount of antioxidant effects you can get by eating antioxidant containing food.

Seems like common sense you can't eat your way out of aging.

The harm is that you may end up replacing those foods with ones that may actually be to linked heart disease. You still have to eat a certain number of calories, so replacing red meat/fried food/saturated fat with say, bread or rice (which are low-fat) might actually increase your risk.

Going on 4 hours of downtime here, this is a disaster. Linode used to be really honest about the status of things, this time, they claim "most linodes should be booted" which seems not to be true.

That's a good question, and one I've been thinking about a lot. Pricing is a tricky thing, so I went ahead and used the competitors models for pricing based on subscription.

It's certainly possible a per page or per test model might work better, but I haven't heard users ask for it yet.

Why does everyone think people will pay to 'control' their network? None I know 'pay' to restrict IM, IRC, newsgroup posts, etc, so why should this be different?
