One theme was that there are older developers who are still working and doing what they love. Of course there are also plenty who have gone into different directions.

Take a look at MailStore Home for offline backup. The personal version is free. http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home.aspx

It can work with a variety of mail sources, including gmail. It also builds a full text index so that you can search offline.

Don't mean to be harsh, but I believe that many people won't have any idea how to open a doc. I'd be willing to help work on an alternative a better design if the aforementioned approach won't work.

It's common to use checkboxes to allow users to select items instead of opening items. You really need to fix this ASAP; it's nice that you want to accommodate power users, but you've essentially made the site useless to everyone else.
