I ran content and educational pages for Kraken a few years ago. This was just as AI was getting useful. I was told by the head of security, the guy who coded all the original software, not to use any outside AI tools to proofread or edit. Then, a few months in, the CEO, Jesse Powell, asked why we were so slow in producing content - we had to edit it all by hand, as you do. We explained the security issues and he said "Who cares, just use it."

So on one hand they are the most secure business on the Internet and on the other hand YOLO!

I live in Brooklyn and noticed this kind of thing before the pandemic - I'd say 2018 or so. I suspect (but I can't confirm) that there was recently a glut of aftermarket mufflers and exhaust systems that were able to amp up a cheap car to make it sounds cool on the BQE. As a technologist it's been interesting to see the growth of this stuff as more and more people figured out what to order on Wish to make their Nissan sound like a tractor.

If you're overweight and unable to lose anything try bariatric surgery. Our food culture is not built to allow overweight people to survive and at this point the ONLY way to do it without massive willpower and endless failure is a surgical solution. Saying "Eat less" isn't an answer any more effective than telling an alcoholic to "Drink less."

I’ve covered the space for years and I think two things are simultaneously true. It’s a huge scam full of shysters and liars who basically found a meaty grift to make a lot of money really fast. I met loads of those people.

What keeps me going, though, is the fact that the technology has some utility and I’m not about to throw out the next tcp/ip because someone will use it to scam an old lady. I like the artistry of the circus but I hate the clowns.

If we are doing analogs, this is the 2000 era of the dot con boom when there were loads of companies doing websites and four guys really doing good work - let’s say bezos, page, brin, and gates. Theil and musk got lucky with their 2k era grift as did a precious few holdouts but only a few really won. Did anyone who bought Netscape early on the retail markets win? Nope. Crypto investors are the ones jumping in after the whales had their taste. They get scraps.

Who is the next FAANG? Who knows. But this is the space where they’re going to be born.

I like to call it writing clean. You write just the subject, the verb, and the object. "Press the button. Find the file on your desktop. Delete the pointer." I'd like to hear what you all think about this. I've been thinking about ways to monetize media (https://medium.com/@johnbiggs/ill-pay-you-to-watch-videos-16...) because the old models aren't working. Mic is shutting down, Steemit is in a hole, and Civil isn't paying journalists. Clearly crypto is part of the answer but how? Anyway, I've created a service that pays you for watching videos. You can upload videos for a few fractions of a BTC and each viewer gets another smaller fraction. It's instant but it requires the viewer to keep facing the video. Lots of potential holes but it's something I wanted to try.

Host your own. I trust medium like I trust Facebook - they're a walled garden and the walls are getting higher.

Hey folks, John Biggs here. I wrote this as a reaction to reason news and it comes at the end of a slow boil. I think we can make better tools than this one and I believe Facebook - and other social media - were originally quite useful and have now devolved due to market pressure. I'm definitely a hypocrite, as well. I still use most things to _broadcast_ not communicate and that's primarily because I've spent 20 years journalizing and am used to the constant, one-sided flow of information. That said I deleted all social apps except for Twitter and, for some masochistic reason, LinkedIn and am ready to tear it all out of my life step by step. It's a poison.

Hey it's John Biggs kind of sort of from TechCrunch. I think what you've seen here is a good assessment of why you want to go. It's great for connections - I try to walk the Alley daily to see what cool stuff is there - and I've met people who have signed deals in the side rooms. That said you make out of it what you put in and it all depends on your product or company.

Want to know what I think it's good for? It puts you in the show, so to speak. I've been over a hundred startup events and I think TC's is the best primarily because of the people you meet and the ability to interact with other startups. It helps you place yourself in the firmament of startups and figure out where to go next.

I'm a founder and I wouldn't want to launch anywhere else. I'm biased to a fault but that's the truth.

I started WristWatchReview.com when I wanted to learn about watches. I was dumb for a long time and still am but I know a little bit more now. Go for it.
