This article does its subject something of a disservice in the fourth paragraph: "His fortune comes not from some flash of entrepreneurial brilliance or dogged devotion to career, but from a lifetime of prudent do-it-yourself buy-and-hold investing."

We learn later in the story that Wertheim did in fact demonstrate enterpreneurial brilliance and dogged devotion to his career and was an unimaginably successful buy-and-hold investor. The company he founded, BPI, threw off up to $10M / year in cash that funded his investment portfolio.

That he he was successful not just as an investor, but also as an inventor and entrepreneur, is what's truly amazing.

Notably, from that site: "Vitess has been serving all YouTube database traffic since 2011, and has now been adopted by many enterprises for their production needs."

For those experiencing an acute sense of déjà vu, this deal was announced in December 2017 and closed today.

This works surprisingly well for a class of unsophisticated attackers. nginx, among others, will happily spoon-feed very large numbers of concurrent clients at 1 byte / second.

One of the factors holding me back from buying an Apple Watch is the need to charge overnight. I wear a Fitbit overnight for sleep quality and duration tracking - imperfect as it is. An iPhone- or iWatch-integrated solution would push me over the edge.

Title should read "Abrupt Termination of Coinbase Support" (not "Coinable Support")

I agree, and this has been my practice: flag what doesn't pass my internal bar and see if the algorithm / moderators / community agree.

For all this community has generated inspired commentary on the technology world, I maintain that we don't have the framework to manage net-positive political debate. My point is we should choose to address that deficiency or choose to avoid political debate.

We'll see where flagging and voting take us - maybe it's enough. So far I would summarize the karmic reaction to my first comment as: "meh."

I'm happy to debate the intersection of technology and politics here. But not pure politics. This community has an identity and norms and topics that are and aren't in scope.

An alternative would be to use the same software, same group of passionate people to start the discussion, and the backing of Y Combinator in a different forum with a different identity, norms, etc.

I'm also happy to be wrong / downvoted. It's for the community to decide, but it has to be a choice.
