There are no shortage of videos showing ICE agents on roaming patrols in Minnesota -- and elsewhere -- menacing anyone they come across who appears undesirable. All you have to do is not look away.

I’m not sure why you won’t acknowledge that a tax that affects domestic and foreign companies equally is not protectionist. But here we are.

I’m not saying that taxes don’t have an impact on the economy, or the business environment, or growth, or profits…of course they do! Maybe the tax will lower demand which makes investment less appealing, and so less investment from Americans happens as a result. But there's also less investment from the Europeans in that case! And most of all, it has nothing to do with the competitiveness of American products in the European market, because the European products face the same tax. VAT does not distort the relative price between European and foreign products.

If you want to say that tax revenue is used for subsidies that are anticompetitive — well money is fungible, you can’t blame that specifically on VAT revenue, and you should be making an argument against subsidies, not the VAT. But then you will need to address the many ways in which the US subsidizes its own industries.

My place hasn’t changed at all. Everything I’ve said is internally consistent. You are welcome to view any form of taxation as an impediment to “free trade” but that’s not how competition works. Feel free to continue believing that taxation is inherently protectionist, I’ll leave it at that.

You are arguing about rules that apply to all companies competing in Europe and then extrapolating that to say that “American companies competing in Europe” are mistreated.

American companies pay VAT in Europe. European companies pay VAT in Europe.

American companies do not pay VAT in in the US. European companies do not pay VAT in the US.

American companies pay sales tax in the US. European companies pay sales tax in the US.

1) EU businesses have to deal with complicated sales tax arrangements that vary by state and municipality.

2) EU businesses have to operate in their own environment and also face the VAT. There is no protectionism here. The playing field with respect to VAT is balanced, regardless of which side of the pond is (...was) an easier business environment to operate in.

That's another way of saying you don't think there should be reforms. It won't happen.

Exponential growth. Lets say that there is one delta infection and one omicron infection in the population. Each delta infection causes two more people to be infected, while each omicron infection causes three more people to be infected.

The growth of a single delta infection: 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 8 -> 16 -> 32 -> 64

Versus a single omicron infection: 1 -> 3 -> 9 -> 27 -> 81 -> 243 -> 729

Omicron started out as 50% of the cases and over 6 reinfection cycles became 90% of the cases. Delta just can't keep up. These are made up numbers but that is the general idea.

HIV does not have anywhere close to a 100% fatality rate anymore, everything about this comment is just completely inflammatory and misinformed. Plus if a vaccine existed for it gay men would take it in a heartbeat.

You are not going to contract HIV from someone by standing in the same room as them. That is a very key difference.

There is plenty of discrimination among gay men when it comes to the possibility of contracting HIV, i.e. sexually. Many will require their partners to be on PrEP.

You must show proof of vaccination, but proof of vaccination is not required to be presented via the Excelsior Pass. It would be nice if we had tri-state cooperation there though.

NYC in 2021 is very different from NYC in the 1980s.

They have been checking balls as part of their information gathering to see the extend of the problem, but remember there is no one ball. The ball is replaced pretty much any time it does anything other than go directly from the pitchers hand into the catcher’s mitt. Two things. One, the rules are already on the books, they just haven’t been enforced. Two, offense is down significantly across the league. MLB needs to do something to level the playing field or fans will lose interest. Pitching duels can be fun, but not every damn game, and that’s what we’ve gotten a lot of this season.

MLB currently has a big problem with balls in play. We’ve trended every year towards “three true outcomes” baseball (that’s when an at bat ends with a HR, strikeout, or walk). It’s an optimal winning strategy in a lot of cases. It’s also dull.

Lets do simple economics: charge a polluting business extra taxes...they pass the extra cost down the supply chain (eventually to consumers)...and they mark up their services by a fixed percentage and use their variable cost as the anchor...which means e.g. a 35% markup leads to more profits for big business, higher expense for consumers, and no actual incentive to cut production levels. Not to mention the inflation triggered by that.

That assumes a completely inelastic demand curve, which is unrealistic.

My point was that your post itself was completely condescending and sensationalistic about the left, and I could do the same to you. You should have a bit of introspection about your final paragraph:

Conservative policy in the US toward climate change right now is "it's a worldwide scientific hoax designed to take down the United States economy." That is not logical or reasonable.
