One special focus is looking for engineers in San Francisco with experience with financial systems (i.e. payments) for an exciting new project.

I think an interesting question that I am currently trying to think through is whether it's possible to structure your outsourcer relationship in such a way that their incentives are more aligned. I will be renegotiation a contract with a company, were we represent over 80% of their business. They have great technical people, and have generally delivered good work, but with more management overhead than we'd like - so we want them to be more accountable. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Agreed.

The only way that the post makes sense to me is that if the organization is large enough, have a role that supports CTO / VPE's efforts and tried to do it in a more data-driven way.

So this way CTO / VPE still have those responsibilities, but have a person who is fully focused on measuring the impact of changes and getting data.

I think these would be very special roles and very few organizations, so not enough to really talk about it as an alternative to the two traditional tracks. That said, there is certainly there is value in this role.

The OP made a serious accusation against a YC company. I assume YC can pretty easily figure out which company this is. I would expect that YC would investigate and take action if warranted.

This looks analogous to Promiscuous from CrowdTap, also a framework for Rails / RabbitMQ. Promiscuous takes a different approach in that it also allows you to go to an SOA architecture but by decomposing your app to run across multiple servers.

Hey, that's one of my favorite questions as well! Great way to gauge depth of knowledge, and you can take it so many places afterwards (HTTPS / SSL, REST, etc).

The best answer I heard started with "well, the enter key press triggers an interrupt...., followed by discussion of browser / OS differences with respect to caching DNS info."

Another way to keep sharp, which surely Peter knows (as he runs several meetups in NYC), is to encourage your team to get involved with local meetups, both as an attendee and a presenter, or do other community-oriented stuff like teaching classes (e.g. skillshare). This has two positive effects – increases the flow of new ideas, and (when speaking) helps your company / team to get more visibility in the community.

While I am very supportive of learning and using cutting edge technologies when it makes sense, it does need to balanced with technical risk assessment, which your post alludes to at the end. For example, say you want to try the Rust language and think it would give you some advantage. Things like maturity / community, etc, definitely come into play.

Innovation comes not just from using new technologies, but also from using new techniques with old boring technologies. I’d even argue that working on cutting-edge problems forces you to innovate, alleviating some of the innovation debt issue (not everybody has that issue).

You can innovate on nonfunctional areas, such as devops, logging, metrics, etc, if your core business needs to be more conservative.

One of the best talks I went to in the last year was by CTO of Etsy, where he talked about how they use “the most boring technologies they can find” – php, mysql, etc. At the same time, Etsy has a very strong reputation in the tech community. http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Etsy

In terms of some of the organizations I know that are using it: IEEE, NetFlix uses it for many internal apps, Target, one of the largest hedge funds in NY area, LiquidNet. I think there are less publisized stories about it because it is more focused on enterprise, which naturally is less open about what they use. However, the community is great, there are a ton of plugins, and VMWare has done a good job continuing to support it as parts of SpringSource ecosystem.

It's the same way that there are so many Spring / Java apps being written out there (including in startups), but they rarely come up on HN as opposed to some of the newer kids on the block, ala node.js or rails.

Agreed. I also chose Grails for my startup 3 years ago, and have been very happy with decision. Allowed us to deliver a huge amount of functionality quickly. And Grails 2.0 has been out for six months, that's been great. 2.1 has some nice things in it (about to come out imminently), and I think they are going to try to get Groovy 2.0 into Grails in 2.2, which will be awesome!

Yeah, the adoption is pretty good, definitely compared to Jython / JRuby. Multiple conferences dedicated primarily to groovy / grails (gr8conf US coming up on Minneapolis on 30-31).

I think Grails is driving a lot of adoption, but I also see it popping up in vendor products that need a scripting language or DSL that integrates with Java easily. Neo4J and Cloudify (Gigaspaces product) come to mind as recent examples.
