You’ll own the journey with customers from initial exploration to production deployment. To be clear, this is a technical engineering role with hands-on coding and software dev that also includes aspects of product management, technical customer success and pre-sales solutions engineering mixed in. We’re language agnostic but strong Python and ML experience is a big plus.

The Offer:

Compensation: Very competitive, we’re looking for folks with a breadth of experience

For high level and exec positions, I will almost certainly do backchannels. But I only do it if I or someone on my exec team is closely enough connected to the backchannel that I know and trust their opinion. The whole point of a backchannel is that it should be an even more trusted source than the gauntlet of interviews I've already put the candidate through.

Backchanneling on every candidate would be way too much. It's only worthwhile when its a high level and high impact role. Moreso, if you were to feel the need to backchannel on everyone, that basically means you dont trust your current team and interview process and should instead focus on that.

Cold backchannel make no sense to me. Not only does it not accomplish the goals of having a trusted and confidential source, but also I would not want this getting back to the candidate accidentally. That would be poor form.

My entire company is remote (~60 people) and we have to pay a few hundred dollars per state and filing fees for having any employees in that state. We're in 15 states and the cost and time (paperwork and jankiness of their govt websites) ranges quite a lot.

It sucks, but it's just the overhead of being a business. Businesses gets tons of benefits in the US and this is just the other edge of that sword. As others have noted, this could just as easily about any of the pitfalls of hiring in your same state, across states, or across countries. Hiring international folks is a whole rats nest of complexity that business owners need to be aware of.

My company hires internationally, plenty of others do too, and as someone else commented above, many YC companies are completely outside the US.

About Pachyderm: Love Docker, Golang, Kubernetes and distributed systems? Pachyderm is an enterprise data science platform that offers Git-like version control semantics for massive data sets and end-to-end data lineage tracking and auditing. Teams that find themselves struggling to maintain a growing mess of advance data science tasks such as machine learning or bioinformatics/genomics research use Pachyderm to greatly simplify their system and reduce development time. They rely on Pachyderm to do the heavy lifting so they can focus on the business logic in their data pipelines. Pachyderm raised our Series B led by M12, Microsoft’s venture arm (https://www.pachyderm.com/blog/pachyderm-closes-16-million-s...), so you'd be getting in right at the ground floor and have an enormous impact on the success and direction of the company as well as building the rest of the engineering team.
