Having been on the “nothing but diet” train for long windows of my life I can confidently say that if you don’t pair the former and latter, you’ll end up in the yo-yo cycle. Over and over again. Took a long time for me to understand that and I STILL struggle.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to say that many people get into management for the money. My thought is that the motivation, the incentive, is wrong.

I’ve had too many shitty managers in my career to think I’d put other people through similar experiences. So, my switch into management was motivated by, hopefully, making the experiences on my team positive ones

If you want money, do management.

If you make it to my comment, please - do not go into management for the money. If you want to build, then remain an IC. If you want to grow other engineers, further THEIR career, make THEM better - go into management.

The friends of mine who ended up in management for the money and complain about their reports make me so angry.

I find this to be an incredibly well-balanced and mature measure of one's self. You should be proud that you were able to reach this level of self-reflection and clarity. Many people never get there, so kudos to you.

It's funny how fast and profoundly "perspective" will hit you. When I was a young programmer I always dreamed of that promotion and comp adjustment. Constantly looking for that next step. That's not inherently bad, per se, but once you reach a particular place you come to find out what the commensurate responsibility looks like. Sometimes -- dare I say, often? -- it's just not fun. That's what they pay you for, though, right?

The friends and colleagues in my cohort, the ones NOW with larger financial and familial responsibilities, curse their former selves for not knowing how good they had it.

I guess all that is to say, as cliche as it is, "be careful what you wish for".

Doing the work is hard. Putting yourself out there in a vulnerable state and hoping for the best is almost AS difficult.

Discourse is a large, huge, very successful project and company but the direction they approached the goal of "open source messageboard/forum" was very different than the way Thredded did. I had hoped to make Thredded a drop-in solution -- they, Discourse, did not. I had hoped to make Thredded as vanilla and "boring" as possible -- they did not (a SPA [ember] on top of rails).

In terms of features, the breadth of their product is larger, more complex, more opinionated. Thredded, on the other hand, hopes to get out of the way if and when you want it to (just look at what @druseph did with notebook.ai/forum).

They did a great job, though. They built a sustainable business on the foundation of "internet messageboards" and for that I applaud them. That was always my goal and I never got there, sadly. That was my dream.

In all fairness, it's been years since I've looked at Discourse so my assumptions may be out of date at this point. Take all this with a grain of salt.

Did not expect to see this show up on HN today (or ever for that matter).

In any case, I wrote the original code for Thredded and it's since had the stewardship taken on by two very smart and capable gentlemen named Gleb and Tim.

In recognition of the 1.0 release I wrote up a short blog post with a little history and background on the project (spoiler: the first version was born 21 years ago!), and congratulating the 2 guys for their work the last 5+ years. They've done an incredible job, and I only wish we'd all met 5 years before.

As a BR-born son of an American and a Brazilian, this post/article brings me all sorts of joy. To this day, the sound of people speaking in BR-PT out in public brings a smile to my face. (To be clear, I live in Boston so there is a pretty large Brazilian population here)

All languages have their own beauty but there's something special about Brazilian Portuguese - the flow, the "sing-song'y" nature of it, it's almost like a dance. Admittedly I am biased, but I've heard similar from people without the background.
