Google Home 10 years ago

I'm not so lazy that I can't hold my phone and google for something. Pass.

It's good to see Europe taking the opposite approach of America with regards to Glyphosate. Forget the studies and just let time show us who is right and who is wrong.

All I do know is that humanity made it this far (15000+ years of agriculture) without such chemicals and we'll probably make it much further without them.

If you like Glyphosate, fair enough, enjoy! The rest of us might sit on the sidelines and watch this experiment unfold.

Agreed, there is no conspiracy here. Just a series of systemic flaws. What's scary is that there needs to be a discussion on this but few economists are brave enough to voice their concerns. David Harvey, Steve Keen, and others are stepping up but we need more people.

Keep in mind also that the 10% reserve doesn't mean physical money (paper/coins). When a bank loans money, it can create $9 out of thin air for every real $1 it holds (be it in paper or in DB entry). When loans are being paid back, the banks count that payment as "real" money against which they can loan 9x the value again. In theory at least, this process can repeat to infinity.

I wonder if anybody unit tested this design for flaws.

It's an unrelated video somebody created subtitles for. The only thing funny about it is the guy's laugh, especially at the last second of the video.

Take your well-visited paths and drag them to the left (where Apps, Documents, etc… are).

Then just click on those labels. It's even faster than typing the path in Window's location bar.

You don't need to have the mouse on the left side. Either go with bluetooth or a cable longer than 20cm.

Is work necessary? 13 years ago

Boredom is a powerful motivator too.

A couple months of laying around doing nothing will drive most people crazy and they'll begin asking themselves what they want their life to be about.

And even if they don't contribute anything, should all people be required to useful to others or can't some just choose to be left alone if they are self sufficient?

In a world of scarcity I can see the argument of forcing people to contribute if they want to take back but what about a world of abundance? You and I are breathing abundant air, for free, and nobody is getting angry right? What if other resources like electricity were as abundant as Tesla once dreamed?

I'm not saying I'm right or wrong. These are just thoughts worth consideration.

Undo 13 years ago

Cocoa offers the same undo implementation as described here with "NSUndoManager" where, for each action, you add the opposite action to an undo stack.

As a pattern it is proven to work. It just consumes memory and servers might not scale as well as a desktop app in this regard.

If the undo/redo stacks don't grow too long and the operations are simple enough in nature it might work though.

Surprising that it took this long to introduce the middle finger as a standard character.

Emails will never be the same again.

I live in Japan and the Japanese government, under its Abenomics movement, decided on another round of QE and injected 20% more currency into the market earlier this year.

I get that the yen is too strong and needs to weaken in order to protect the trade balance between itself and other countries.

But the inflation eventually reached us consumers and every day items have gotten that much more expensive.

Now my 10,000 yen only gets me ~8333 yen worth of stuff. If I could go back in time and not contribute the lost 1/6th of my savings in labor I might not be angry, but I can't.

My salary isn't going up either and there is even talk of pay reduction due to a worsening economy.

So to protect myself my choices seem to be:

1. Buy things up before the inflation reaches me as a consumer, passing the purchasing power theft on to the merchants. (possible, but I blow all my money away)

2. Convert that currency to something else that hedges against inflation (and retains its value over time) if I want to not spend it.

I chose #2 in the form of gold.

If you want to call me a goldbug, go ahead.

I'm getting into REITs soon too so maybe you can come up with clever derogatory name for that as well.

I'll try to help you win your bingo round.

Gold is special. It's easier to carry than a barrel of oil, and stays fresher longer than a bunch of corn or wheat. That's why gold tends to get used as money over and over in history.

But you're right about one thing... inflation increases the value of real assets.

Or to put it better, the value of real things doesn't change (a loaf of bread is a loaf of bread) but the value of the dollar weakens in regards to it with inflation. Bringing us back to the beginning of the argument that inflation steals the purchasing power of people.

If I bought gold 20 years back I would have paid $300 for 1 toz. That same 1 toz of gold today costs me $1351. The gold hasn't changed. The US$'s purchasing power has.

[EDIT: I should mention that inflation isn't the sole reason it takes more money to buy gold than 20 years ago. There are of course some other factors.]
