My info was out of date but pre-Dec 2019 (Caesars Union Suit), electronic communication channels were treated like break rooms- if they aren’t already restricted to only work chat, and you could shoot the shit, then they can’t block or specifically spy (or appear to spy) on protected union activity. Post that ruling, I don’t really understand where the line is. Apparently if there is no other way to communicate outside of work with your co-workers, then they have to let you do it. Maybe you could argue that’s the case during coronavirus unless you can easily get everyone’s personal emails. Shrug

The other prong of this that is still possibly illegal though is spying on union-specific activity, and leaving that information out for employees to find, which fits under the criteria of making employees believe they’ll be spied on for unionizing - even not on company IT systems.

There’s already an NLRA complaint against amazon (source: Matt Bruenig on Twitter) over the Union-spy job posting. It’ll be interesting to see where that goes and if this gets tacked on.

This includes your right to distribute union literature, wear union buttons t-shirts, or other insignia (except in unusual "special circumstances"), solicit coworkers to sign union authorization cards, and discuss the union with coworkers. Supervisors and managers cannot spy on you (or make it appear that they are doing so), coercively question you, threaten you or bribe you regarding your union activity or the union activities of your co-workers. You can't be fired, disciplined, demoted, or penalized in any way for engaging in these activities.

How charitable, now to implement that everyone has to prove their level of income and assets before receiving aid and will unnecessarily screw people on the margins in situations you didn’t imagine up front. Interestingly the paper they cite for more-constitutional alternatives to a wealth tax actually includes a wealth tax in its suite of options and argues in favor of the constitutionality of a wealth tax (p 25)

E: I should add it disagrees with the central argument that this would be a “direct tax” and mentions ways the wealth tax could itself be structured to give the Supreme Court less of a leg to stand on. Personally I’d rather run a candidate that would even bring this fight in the first place. Maybe if it’s on the news then the >99% of viewers will realize that the <1% are able to beat them down easily in any legal fight imaginable despite their incredible small numbers and harmful distribution preferences.

No it's collective action vs individual self interest. Or actual politics versus consumerism. Not the same thing at all and should not be confused. If you think a charter or private school is the best for your kid right now and for you then that's one thing. And what is best for other families and teachers in your community may be another. You can support them politically.

The author doesn't back up anything, quotes no theory on either side, no history or economic data. It contains killer anecdotes and gut feelings though - a ratio of about 100%-0% between navel gazing and chin scratching VS reading Marxist theory where people have, you know, talked about the thing you're talking about for over a century. It's particularly stunning that an essay on inequality does not mention the word "profit".

My favorite part is the killer anecdote that seals the deal at the end, which is basically the equivalent of "You dislike Wall St but you own an iPhone? Interesting". It may as well have been pulled from a boomer Facebook meme.

As a full-time tech worker, time management is just as important with your off-hours projects as it is in your 9-5. You can only do so much (time is finite) so it's important to know when to drop a side project when the ROI isn't quite enough (in this case I'm talking about your wife).

Not being able to hack out a project for days straight is simply unhealthy.

People already do this, they're those "awesome-react", "awesome-redux", etc GitHub repos with the giant readmes and peppered with emojis. IMO it's kinda mean to sarcastically name them like that.
