I am currently experimenting with the current Midi functionality in AudioKit along with a Swift music theory library https://github.com/danielbreves/MusicTheory to compose and sequence music. Using Audiokit to send Midi events to Logic pro

Does/will WebMIDI support any kind of Automation events through an easy to use abstraction? Thanks again

Where as with an mobile dev, their scope is model, view and controller code (full stack)

Your thinking of it in terms of the whole mobile app being the front end and the rest API being the backend. But the app its self has both "front end" and "backend" code segregation its self

My experience with AWS has been exactly this. I had a Cognito question/issue on IOS that I posted to stack-overflow and got a quick response from an engineer at Amazon. Also I posted a support ticket (zero paid support) to increase my sns API calls limit (which didn't end up being required because I was doing it wrong) and they got back to me over a few days to a week.

On the other hand, Google takes my Android app off the play store with next to zero details on the reason why and I have next to zero methods to contact them. The only way I was able to get my app back was to remove features via trial and error to determine what part was infringing. Why would i partner with Google again for hosting?

Mindset is everything (at-least extremely important for any level of success in entrepreneurship and most other things)

Most entrepreneurs solving ambitious problems look crazy to outsiders. Hence the famous Steve Jobs quote

"The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."

Look at what the Gates, Jobs and Musks of this world have achieved with their 'anything-is-possible' mindsets..

As someone who has developed an app for Android (going into it knowing Java really well) and now porting it to iOS using swift ( not knowing Swift at all), the language is actually the least of your worries. It's like you say the tooling, the paradigms, the UI and libraries, SQLite etc which are the biggest learning challenges. Also mobile dev is unique in its self (limited hardware & no reliable network conn)

That's been my experience anyway...

Even though I've been programming/developing software for 10+ years, number 4 is still relevant to me also.

What I've found is taking on the attitude of "make it work, then make it right" works well for me.

With anything moderately complex and new, you are never going to fully understand everything and get it right the first time. The best strategy is just hack something together until it "works", then constantly be revising and refactoring from there. Instead of spending hours architecting, reading and planning just jump in and start coding.

Or else you just end up in analysis paralysis or over engineering.

I'm working on a project which uses Golang, swift (ios) and Postgresql which are all new technologies for me. I haven't read a single book on any of them, I just jumped straight in and started developing. And bit by bit, line by line I have made good measurable progress.

This is driving me crazy. I managed to stumble across this feature via cmd+f one day and as quickly as I find it, they remove it. Seriously?

The only way this feature could be used was via a keyboard shortcut, it wasn't a something cluttering the UI or adding additional cognitive load in a menu for a user - and it was damn handy.

The day where the update removed this feature I wanted to find the product manager at Spotify and yell WTF at their face.

I saw it on my iPhone, I thought it was clearly gold and white.

Had a discussion about it with a colleague (he saw it as clearly blue and black). I got up to go check his monitor and as I got closer it changed colour right before my eyes.

I went back to my desk and checked my phone and it had changed to blue and black. MIND = BLOWN

However the article is kind of correct.

Positive thinking without action is almost a waste of energy, however positivety leads to optimism which leads to action.

It's because skeuomorphism worked when you had screens of a consistent size. Ie, iPhone 4s and below. Because skeuomorphism is so bitmap heavy it doesn't scale to different screen sizes.

Imo flat design came largely from responsive web design. It's just easier to build nice looking ui which adapts to any screen size when it's flat. This of course was why it suited android, because they have hundreds of diff screen sizes to cater for...

At my first job I inherited a project from a snr dev who decided to implement his own date logic instead of using the ones provided in .net

Anyway come feb 29th 2008 I get a call about some users were having issues. After not to long I figured out it was caused because of the leap year and his logic did not account for leap years. So I called them back and told them it would fix its self by tomorrow. I never actually bothered to fix the bug because a) I thought it was unlikely that the pos system would still be used in 4 years and b) the code was so bad in all areas that trying to fix anything had a good chance of breaking something else.

Lets just say that job was very character building

One advantage it does have is apps can auto update and extend themselves. Eg, wordpress makes extending it with 3rd party plugins extremely painless from a user perspective.

As for not being able to access a array directly from a function which returns the array. It's just syntactical sugar. Yes long over due syntactical sugar however.

I haven't upgraded to Mavericks at all yet because I'm worried that it will break software I depend on a daily basis. Can some please confirm if upgrading has a significant risk of breaking compatibility with things like rails, mamp, netbeans, android studio, golang, vagrant, virtualbox, docker etc.

I'm currently surveying 600 of my early users of my android app.

What's disconcerting so far is their answer to the following question:

The app will be 100% free for you forever (thank you for the support) however what do you think is reasonable pricing? Consider, that some of the revenue will be re-invested in making the app better for all users

It's early days now but it's trending towards $1/$2 when in reality I believe that it's worth allot more to anyone who gets a fair amount of value from it.

My point is start with the primitives. Baby steps.

YOUR DOING IT WRONG

disclaimer, I've never actually taught programming so this is my own opinion

Start with BASIC, yes totally 30 years old and unsexy.

Learn the primitives. Baby steps

Variables, control flow, looping, conditions, functions, data structures (start with arrays, then go to 2d arrays and parallel arrays)

Then go to reading and writing files etc etc

Do NOT move on to the next thing until you have a complete understanding of the previous. DO NOT JUMP TO FUCKING RAILS UNTIL YOU HAVE A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF 100% Of THE ABOVE AND CAN GET ALL THOSE PRIMITIVES WORKING TOGETHER TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEM.

So then take your .bsc files and rewrite them in a sexy language say ruby or python.
