My company, Invoiced, supports routing payments across different processors/merchant accounts. There are many interesting use cases for it within the billing space beyond just cutting transaction costs.

One common use case we see is trust accounting for lawyers. The gist of it is that trust and operating funds are stored in separate bank accounts, depending on the context of the bill. It’s a legal requirement that can result in disbarment if not followed properly.

Another scenario we run into is with insurance billing where policy payments need to go to different bank accounts or even be handled by a different processor, depending on the policy.

I know of other software systems that can do payment routing as well.

HN comments first. I read the article before contributing to the discussion though.

The Oklahoma state government is grossly incompetent (I grew up here). A few years ago they cut the oil and gas production tax down to as low as 1% for the first 3 years. After a new well has been in production for 3 years the tax rate goes back up to 7%. The problem with that is that most of the production happens in the first 3 years. When the normal tax rate kicks in the wells are mostly dry!

And yet to this day, with the school system falling to pieces, the state government is still debating [0] whether to re-impose this tax on oil and gas producers. Keep in mind that this tax cut directly benefits companies like Devon that have an $18B market cap, as well as other larger out-of-state producers. As a comparison, neighboring Texas seems to tax oil and gas production at 4.6% [1]. It's a very shameful situation.

In my opinion this is the crux of the problem. Law makers have messed up priorities. In an ironic twist some oil and gas producers are even asking for the tax to be raised [2]. Even they know it is too generous.

I would assume the board seats that the investors get in return for their investment provide this kind of protection. If the founders do not want to raise another round then the investors can boot the founders out and replace them with someone that will play ball. With board control then this might be more implied versus explicitly defined in the fundraising terms.

I made this 4 years ago for those times when you just need an invoice. Today 10s of thousands of individuals and businesses use this each day to get paid. It's free to use with no login required. Instead it uses localStorage to remember data.

There definitely needs to be more awareness about this. Just from a quick read of the WOT forum it seems most users are completely shocked that their data was being sold, even though this is outlined in the WOT terms of service.

Here is what the WOT terms of service say about sharing their users' browsing data:

  The information we collect is aggregated, non-personal non-identifiable information which may be made available or gathered via the users' use of the WOT Utilities ("Non-Personal Information"). We are not aware of the identity of the user from which the Non-Personal Information is collected. This. We use Mixpanel's free plan and were recently hit up by their sales team. It's unfortunate because Mixpanel is an amazing product that we would be happy to pay for, but it's just too expensive relative to the value we get out of it.

I've had a similar experience on Linode as well. In fact, in the few months that I have been using Digital Ocean for a personal server they have had more outages than the past ~2 years on Linode.

I'm curious how this affects other services as well. Control announced today that they raised $1.5M. [1]
