The problem is that it doesn’t matter if someone is told something isn’t true, their beliefs aren’t changed.

The concern around deep fakes is that they could be used to trick people, fair enough, but apparently tricking people doesn’t require much, if any, believably. Throughout history up to today people are tricked by the most obvious untruths with disastrous consequences on large scales.
It would be nice if this was one tool, rather than two overlapping tools with some incompatiblies between them.
It works quite well, but you need a host that isn’t blocked, and they tend to block AWS IPs, so you have to change the IP every now and then. For browsing SwitchyOmega works well with ssh.
My AT&T iPhone wasn’t blocked when roaming in China, it seems they make exceptions for foreign phones. They’re censors are very clever at knowing where the limits are.
It’s not the same, Comcast and other ISPs don’t tamper with HTTPS, and if they break the HTTPS connection then it’s a clearer problem for the ISP to troubleshoot than corruption.
Sorry I don’t understand what double wrapping has to do with it, or why you’d ever do that.
Yet it’s actually not simpler for the user, since their transfer can then be tampered with either by accident or intentionally leaving the user with a broken download and then what do they do? A redownlaod from a different mirror makes no difference.
Which countries? I’ve only seen HTTP connections tampered with in practice, and China’s GFW blocks HTTP no different than HTTPS from what I’ve seen.
He never explains why he wants to use HTTP, it’s only about why he thinks HTTPS isn’t nesscary.
It’s missing customer acquisition cost, this is pretty important imo because it gives you a framework to measure and explore ways to improve it.
That’s my core understanding too, the model is essential and that not only rubs statisticians the wrong way but also the current luminaries in deep learning get visibly irritated by that too. The irony is that JP was very successful with statistics having invented Bayesian Networks, and now has moved on.
Here he asks a very simple question and look at the body language from the panel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFYM9j8bGtg&t=50m47s
It’s satstics applied to cultural anthropology in its current form, it doesn’t have a hard underpinning and changes from culture to culture. So it’s just relative opinions most of the time.
It’s not about pretend science IMO.
Bitbucket’s killer feature is integration with JIRA and the rest of the Atlassian stack, so I doubt it’ll have much impact.
CenturyLink isn’t exactly an underfunded provider though.
The meta issue here is that they didn’t have a plan to then validate the changes afterwards. And Grab’s contractors being from India know that streets can be unpredictable and change since it’s assuredly the same for them too and not just a quirk in Thailand. It’s an astonishing disconnect from reality based on western standards of paying attention, but I think this is pretty normal in SE Asia and causes a lot of problems. Hopefully they’ll be able to shed these habits at some point.
They let Valve know in advance I’m sure, it’s a small industry and the polite thing to do with friends.
This link has some Q&A with Tim too with more details:

No I’m sure they wouldn’t do that, at least as long as Tim is in charge.
Yes, it’s also because platforms control what you can expirence, and if they feel it competes with their platform in someway they disallow it. So studios aren’t going to tolerate that going forward.
As there’s more competition from studios entering the publishing space you should be able to get a better deal, with better and more current tech. The up side is Steam gives you visibility to a large player base with new publishers won’t have on day one, but it’s coming.
Many larger studios are working on self publishing and have projects in the works. The percent that Valve takes even at 20% is still too high, but the bigger issues is that Valve locks up your users so when you make your next game you have to reacquire them, ownership of ones users is the key due to this issue. We’ll see how they fair over the coming years but this does look like they’re starting to wake up a bit to how unhappy execs have been with Steam stagnating and reaping 30% still.
The core issue is that you need to establish a norm, but without an absolute point of reference such as enlightenment it’s like trying to walk strait in a dessert which is not possible. But if you bring this point up of going in circles they act just like Plato describes in his Cave Alegory. So it’s not a new issue. I don’t know if anyone has written a book specifically about psychology being a faux science, like eugenics in a way, but someone should.
Exactly, the west part is that we tend to think that everything in the west is the whole world or whole field, when Asia is light years ahead in this case in that they focus on the underlining logic mathematically.
Psychology in the west is really a form of cultural anthropology, in that it’s just measuring behaviors for a specific set of people but not the underline mind directly. So this would make sense IMO that you can’t repeat many of the studies because they’re not grounded in the fundamentals of the mind but a layer abstracted a way by cultures and habits. Akin to strudying a Toyota car and trying to generalize all of physics from it.
I have to admin I’ve never quite understood the need for the overlay network, esp with such a large performance impact. Security has been moving higher up into the app layer anyway with Beyond Corp style approaches. What are the uses cases driving it?
This is one of the gaping security holes that open source has always had, you don’t know where the code came from and your best indication if it’s safe is how popular it is. Npm and Maven libs being the scariest since there are hundreds for even small apps.
